*Not a story* Offer to help out writers

Post by EvilPyrate »

Hey guys, I just wanted to offer my services if anyone would like to take me up on it.

I actually work as a technical editor for a security software company. A large part of my job is to look for grammar and spelling mistakes and proofread what is submitted to our department before it goes out on our website.

For anyone who would like to have someone proofread and offer suggestions to improve the appearance of stories before they are submitted, please feel free to PM me. I'll get you my email address so that you can send a copy of the story. I'll put in my edits and any suggestions I have then send it back to you. If you like and agree with the changes I've made, they are yours to post. If not, I'm not going to get bent out of shape if you post your original.

The reason I'm offering is that I love reading all of the Tales and Stories from our community. This has always been one of my favorite parts of the Dasaria forums. I want to help all of our people get to be better writers and feel confident in posting more of their histories and experiences.

Unless you can 'edit' laziness, I'm sorry to say I can't be helped. :P

In all seriousness, thank you for offering this. A clarification on the definition of 'proof-reading' as I believe it is used in EvilPyrate's post: not only searching for and correcting mistakes, but commenting on the layout of the story, per se.

One example:

I could write "The bard picked up the blue stone when it shined and he saw it", and the proof-reader/editor might suggest that it be changed to "A glint of light on metal painted the corner of the Bard's eye and he stopped; realizing it was a shockingly blue gemstone of some sort, he grasped and deposited it in his pack."

Am I correct?

Answering Evelond's question:

Yes, that is part of what I am offering if that is what the writer wants.

If someone JUST wants spelling, grammar, and word usage checked, that's all I would do.

If they want me to edit for wording, story flow and impact, I will do that as well. What I will do for a story or IC post is entirely up to the writer.

greetings from a fellow technical editor (only i am for a research and development in primarily electrical engineering). good to know there are others out there that know the joys of having to correct grammar for the grammar impaired.

i'd probably implement some of my grammar editing skills right now, but i'm tired.

I think I read every tale that is added to this section. You'd be amazed at how much insight it can give as to what a player finds fascinating about fantasy and characterization.
