Good anime to be seen there, I suggest .hack\\Sign or Serial experiments Lain.

Been a anime geek for some time now.
I'd rather watch anime cuz those asian people at least make a descent plot in cartoons... I uno mayhaps t'is just my kind'v thing.

Ahhh! Do no watch Lain first, whatever you do!

Same with Evangelion. Eva's good, as much as I hate to admit it, but you do NOT want that show to be your introduction to anime.

Oh, and if you want a hilarious, utterly random, and very short series...FLCL. Another great show that I don't think should be the first series you watch.
Draco - "Allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste."
Lorcann - "BACON!"

I haven't been exposed to any anime that hasn't been on Cartoon Network, so I'm certainly no authority. :?

That being said, I really loved the Gundam Wing series, the themes and some of the characters were really engrossing, and it was just fun to watch. They also aired some of Cowboy Bebop long ago and I saw a few episodes of that, seemed great but I never caught it again.

Do you want suggestions from non-japanese animation? There's quite a few good shows out there.

I'm currently watching it at home on AN, I can't believe I forgot it.

Slayers (original series, NEXT and TRY).. I'm watching TRY right now on Anime Network On-Demand.. waiting for the next episode to appear (what a nice cable company Time Warner is to offer such a thing :))

An awesome show, and Gundam Wing AC I highly recommend as well, but I've only gotten into AC, I can't get into the other Gundams. (There's at least one other, Seed, I think.)

Don't try swimming through a mound of gold. It's not as comfortable as Uncle Scrooge makes it out to be.

... I sense a story behind that comment.

I wish there was. I could use a mound of gold right about now.

I don't know much about the genre, but I have seen (and enjoyed) the Ghost In The Shell movies, and I also enjoyed Appleseed.

I'll probably watch Ghost in the Shell if I can find it somewhere. If it's good I'll look into the second one.

This looks decent because Deus Ex was influenced by it, so it has to have something. ; P
