They had to fork the nwn code off at a point before a lot of fixes and features were added IIRCk9burn wrote:Bull. If they had any semblance of reason, Bioware would have used a good source repository. Source repositories can be very complex and handle code branches, main lines, patch releases, etc..This is because they could not reverse engineer Neverwinter Nights 1 from the patches.
They had to take the original code and adjust it for a new engine. Of course this will create a lot of the same bugs, and I am sure these would have been fixed had it not been for the financial state of the company itself.
There is no reason, other than financial gain (or rushing) to not use the full patched source. I'm sure the final NWN1 source is there, somewhere, and I bet someone wasn't willing to pay for it.

Yes, these things are much better in NWN2.Falcon wrote: In NWN2, those limitations simply don't exist. I can literally create any kind of area using several textures at once, where I was dependant on a tileset in NWN1. This creates literally limitless opportunities.
Not even getting into height mapping. In NWN1 I was stuck with ramps and "step-up" elevation. This was smoothed out in haks, but not perfected. In NWN2 I can literaly sculpt the land as I please. What was "guess-work" in NWN1 has become art. It now takes a semblance of artistic skill to create something wondrous in NWN2. I could literally go on.
This is definitive improvement over NWN1, and I honestly can never look back.
the problem is that's ALL That's better. Mind you it's a LOT better, still I wish they had spread their effort around a bit more.
Let me go on a tangent here that often bugs be a little, it will explain why i think they have done a good job with what they had.
I do feel the game was rushed at release but every problem that the game has had tells me it was a rushed result, it had a realy nice backbone and concept its just not polished.
So we all know Obsidian have a great Producer that is willing to wait for a game to be complete (or at least a releasable state for the developer) before allowing it to be released.
NOT
They got Atari, who is notirious for sticking to a deadline reguardless of the state of the game being produced, if it will run.. they will buy is the Atari moto. Atleast thats what I am certainly thinking given their recent history of releases.
... A few months prior to NWN2 release date
Atari: So its near the time we gave for development, its planed to be released on x date.
Obsidian: but its just not near ready, we are going to need more time to complete it
Atari: well we want it released then so tie it all up and get on testing
Obsidian: well it woth be in a finished state nore will we have all the functionality for it as NWN had, the customers will be expecting it.
Atari: it gets released the or not at all.. period.
Obsidian, needing to get some return on what they have invested in it: /sigh, ok
Obsidian rush off pulling in long hours to get NWN2 in some kind of releasable state.
I personaly thought the OC story was quite good initially (act 1 and eairly act 2) and had nice hope for it, towards the end I just wanted it over cause it lost something. It as a whole package has just led me to believe had it been releaded some 3-6 months later it would have likely been a much different game.
But then thats just me.
