Could you substitute the same amount of pure extract for the paste?

Re: Recipes from the Dasarian Kitchens
Sure.
The vanilla is essentially an "added" ingredient to the original recipe. You can add it to taste, or substitute whatever you want.

Re: Recipes from the Dasarian Kitchens
Okay, I know coke is bad for you...and I do not drink sodas in general all that often. But, I tried this recipe and both Wvy and I agreed, it makes a great , very tender roast.
Cola pot Roast:
4 pounds beef sirloin roast
3 carrots, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 (.75 ounce) packet dry brown gravy mix
2 tablespoons water
1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
10 fluid ounces cola-flavored carbonated beverage
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Place meat in a roasting pan. Sprinkle carrots, celery and minced garlic around roast.
In a small bowl, combine the brown gravy mix and water, mixing into a smooth paste. Add onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup and cola-flavored carbonated beverage. Pour over the roast.
Cover pan, and cook 1 hour in the preheated oven.
Reduce oven temperature to 225 degrees F (110 degrees C), and continue cooking 2 hours. Remove from oven, and turn roast over so that the top is now covered with the gravy. Cover pan, and return to oven for a minimum of 2 hours.
Remove from oven, and let meat rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Re: Recipes from the Dasarian Kitchens
I had an old friend come and stay this weekend, and since we both love cooking, we went a little crazy in the kitchen. It was such a gorgeous dinner that I thought I would share it with you.
Entree: Garlic prawns
Raw prawns
Garlic, minced
Sesame Oil, a few drops
Add coconut oil to wok, then add garlic once the oil has heated. Stir through the prawns until they just begin to change to a pale pink colour. add sesame oil, then top with a sprinkling of fresh coriander and devour while cooking the main course.
Main: Salmon with asparagus, mushroom & coriander
1 x Salmon steak, cooked lightly (can be smoked if you prefer)
Fresh baby asparagus spears
Handful of mushrooms, halved
Fresh coriander bunch, roughly chopped (leaves and stems)
Coconut cream
Fresh lime
Black rice
Boil the rice for 35 mins in approx 1 cup coconut cream, 1/2 cup water. Top up with water if need be. Lightly drain the rice when cooked.
Add about 1/4 cup coconut cream to wok, toss though asparagus and mushrooms until the asparagus turns vivid green, then toss through the salmon and coriander at the last moment just to warm them through.
Serve the main on a bed of black rice, then drizzle fresh lime juice over the top. Top with chopped fresh pieces of lime.
Best served with a New Zealand sauvignon blanc straight out of the coldest part of the fridge, and eaten while reminiscing about shared travel experiences.

Blueberry Goat Cheese Basil Pie
It sounds weird..it has basil in it..and it's AMAZING...
Crust: 2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 to 3/4 cups cold margarine
1 tablespoon sugar
Pinch salt
Cold water
Filling:
1/2 cup soft goat cheese
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 large egg
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
Pinch salt
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh basil
5 cups fresh blueberries
Topping:
1 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup melted margarine
Directions
For the crust:
Combine the flour, margarine, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Work with your fingers gathering and crumbling until you have a crumbly mixture, about the size of peas.
In small amounts, slowly add cold water, incorporating by hand. As soon as the dough comes together in a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and throw in fridge for 30 minutes.
For the filling:
Mix the goat cheese, heavy cream, egg, sugar, flour, salt and basil together in a bowl. Add the blueberries and stir to desired texture.
For the topping: Mix the almonds, sugar and margarine in bowl, set aside.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Roll out the dough and place in a 10-inch pie pan. Pour the filling into the crust and do whatever you want with the crust edges (I made mine a little bigger and just folded them over roughly. It doesn't need to be pretty.) Sprinkle the topping over the top. Bake 25 minutes, rotating the pie halfway through.

This is for you Alth
Grandma's Chicken Sauce Piquante'
2 whole chickens
2 Tb olive oil
2 c onions chopped
1 c bell pepper, chopped
2/3 c jalapenos, finely chopped ( I use a food processor)
1/2 c celery, finely chopped
2 Tb garlic, minced
2Tb parsley flakes, dried
2 TB whole sweet basil, dried
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp Cajun seasoning ( I use Tony's)
1 tsp Cayenne Pepper
6 oz tomato paste
16 0z tomato sauce
1 c reserved chicken stock
dark roux made with 1/2 c flour
Place chickens in a pot and cover with water by 2-3 inches. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium high and biol for an hour. Remove chickens, reduce heat to low on the stock. Cool chickens, pick all the meat and reserve. Place the bones back in the stock bring water level to above the bones and boil for 1 hour. Drain stock into a pot and allow to stand for 20 minutes. Skim fat with a ladle and reserve the stock.
In a 4 quart pot ( or bigger), heat oil to hot. Add onions, bell pepper, jalapeno peppers, celery, garlic and spices. Stir until mixture begins to bubble. Add tomato paste, stirring well. Bring heat to high, stirring until paste begins to brown. *** tomato sauce and stir until blended. Add 1 cup of the reserved chicken stock ( you can freeze the rest) and stir until blended. let the mixture come to a boil then add the dark roux. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for one hour, stirring frequently. Return to a high heat, adding the diced chicken meat, stirring until blended. Cover, reduce heat to low, simmer 15 minutes without stirring.
This can be served over rice or pasta ( grandma always did it with spaghetti) and it is spicy!
