Newbie monk experience....
Monks are too cool not to be considered one of the best classes. Wizards? Clerics? Meh, no thanks. Some of my most fun "tear them up" characters have been pure Monks. It isn't all about numbers, but even if it was, a well-built Monk can still be as hard as nails in a stand up fight, either in melee, or for taking down casters.
It's just a game...

Mmmm a monk and a bard combo.....very very fun.Eowade wrote:I love monks also they spoil you with perma haste once you play one for awhile when you switch to another character it feels like everything is in slow motion. They do have lots of stats to split between but but so do bards. Also a druid can be a monks best friend with their wisdom buff spell that boosts wisdom by half their level add in mage armor, shield, and barkskin and they can be pretty hard to hit with evasion for aoe blasts and immunity to many spells.

I'm always right. I'm also a jerk. It's not my fault you can't get over the latter to see the former.

Monks definitely have a niche in the D&D world. While not the toughest melee fighters...they are definitely the best anti-caster melee out there. With great saves, great speed and spell resistance (and imba IKD) they can be a caster's nightmare.
A monk isn't really designed to go toe-to-toe against a strong melee combatant, although they can still deal with that situation using stunning fists..
Early on monks will have it rough...thats the life of a monk.

wow
I never said monks were not fun or cool. They seem really cool.
I just said they are not one of the strongest in response to people suggesting they are among the strongest.
This doesn't mean power is all that matters, but in response to the OP's points, knowing that monks arenot really very strong help's to provide context for one's expectations.
