Fight Club by Chuck P---however you spell his last name.. Palahniuk? is recommended by me, as is anything by Joyce Carol Oates. Though, I just read "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven" by Sherman Alexie, and I personally do -not- recommend it.

I'd have to recommend more David Gemmell, I read through his first book and the first in the Drenai tales series, Legend. It's very very awesome, much better then White Wolf IMO, mainly because if features Druss the Legend much more prominantly.
I'm now reading the next book in the series, The King Beyond The Gate which so far is just as good as Legend. Overall they're just great fantasy books that tell the story more about the warrior, and tell it from multiple characters. He has a knack of giving every character flavour, even one that has only a one page appearence you get slightly attached to.
/Gemmell fan boy.

Nightwatch - Terry Pratchett
Guards! Guards! Guards! - Terry Pratchett
Going Postal - Terry Pratchett
The fifth Elephant - Terry Pratchett
Those 4 books will give alot of amusing quirks that characters can have, a lighter funnier version of medival times with magic. Plus it has cool inventions for those more techno-mo-logically inclined.

Evelond Formos
Things Not Seen by I-forget-his-name-but-he-wrote-a-book-called-"Frindle". It seems geared toward younger readers, when you look at the simplicity. However, it's narrated by a 15-year-old kid who wakes up one morning to find himself invisible. This is definitely one of my favourite books; it has logic in it, and I like logic in books. That's why I love the Artemis Fowl series: it explains nigh EVERYTHING, so that given the laws of possibility presented in the book, you can figure out exactly why events occur.
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.

Hmmmm.....Where to start?
I loved Dune by Frank Herbert. However I thought his book White Plague was much better. Awesome and scary read since it is possible to do in todays world.
Katherine Kurtz's Camber of Culdi series. Interesting twist of Catholicism and magic.
Battlefield Earth is a very good read. Don't let the crappy movie dissuade you.
Anne McAffery's Pern series is a good read also. Highly formulaic they are engrossing and emotionaly engaging. My favorite was the first in chronological order, Dragonsdawn.
While Trevanian is probably most famus for The The Eiger Sanction (movie with Clint Eastwood) in my mind his best books are Shibumi and The Summer of Katya. Shibumi is an excellent resource for would be assassins
. The Summer of Katya has one of the best twists at the end that I've read in a long time.
MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series. While not for everyone, these chick-lit books are pretty good for guys and gals. Especially for vampire fans.
Speaking of vampires...Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's series is very good for history fans. Frst book in the series is Hotel Transylvania. While they can be read in any order since none depends on each other this was the first she wrote and a good introduction. History fans should look up Le Comte de Saint-Germain. He's a real person with an interesting history.
Any book by Carl Hiaasen. Formulaic but hilariously funny books. Sick Puppy was my favorite. Other good ones are Skinny Dip and Hoot.
I'll post more later.

I'm currently hooked on Stephen King's Dark Tower series, just finished reading the 3rd book and off to read the 4th in the series of 7. It's a long read but i'm hooked!
It's an old one but I'm just coming around to discover it now, the whole thing so far is about Roland of Gilead, the last gunslinger in a world that has moved on, and his epic journey to find the Dark Tower which is believed to be the center of all creation and where he beleives he can finally set things right. It's basically a big struggle between good and evil, demons, and magic in a western fantasy setting. Definately worth picking up.

Yeah Malta drove me nuts to =P
I picked em up the tawney man and liveship trader series after reading the farseer books. I just picked up the first book in her latest as well.
Edit: despite me actually hating the character she was really well developed and I liked that I actaully wanted to strangle a character in a book.

Great series. My fave. It might be worth mentioning he meets 3 would-be gunslingers from our world along the way to join in his deadly journey. A crackhead, a disabled african american woman, and Evelond.IronWaffle wrote:I'm currently hooked on Stephen King's Dark Tower series, just finished reading the 3rd book and off to read the 4th in the series of 7.
