question about PK

Have run into this same scenerio alot lately. Have been attacked several times lately with no prior RP or conversation with the one attacking. Most i have been able to escape from before death of either person.
But the latest one really is kind of annoying. Was going through the thiefs guild quest, when a party came up to where i was. After i finished the fight with the thieves in that room. There was a lil' conversation started by the party. And one in the group asked me a question. While i was responding, the other attacked me. This wouldnt normally be a problem, but with the text box open, i was unable to use the <s> key as i normaly do to break off the automatic fight this attack caused and use HIPS to get out of there (big oops i didnt figure out chat box was open till after respawn). Either way after the first party member attacked the other joined in.
Big question is, should there be some sort of warning before PK starts? Or is it fair game to attack other players cause of their in game race or you dont like them from other RP'd times without warning?
PS... Not really complaining just want to know what the rule is. Thats why no names are given. I dont want to be wrong if i return the favor later down the road.

This doesn't really specify what are the measures to be taken to attack someone in RP terms. I think a good measure to attack someone is to make them hostile first (through the Player List). This lets them know you are getting ready to attack them. Unless you are attacked first of course.
If you feel you are griefed, make sure to take a screen shot of the dialog right away, and submit it to a DM (Wyv or Jeh).

It was me and BR.
He was playing his deaf orc monk at the time being.
The setting was this: we were at Kalam brotherhood underground - we see a drow there.
So, I go to asking if he worked with the thieves... no reply. Patience (BR's orc) doesn't speak, and was waiting kind of my reaction.
So, when I did not hear any reply, I said he must be working with the thieves, BR attacked and I followed.
It makes perfect RP sense to me, a filthy spitbucket Drow underground with the thieves... not to mention my halfling would have stabbed likely him anyway (people that know my ling know what I speak of).

Wait a decent time for someone to reply, is my suggestion. I've played with people, and myself included, who tend to type quite a bit at once at some times. It could have been he was still typing, which is what it sounds like from the original post. Seems like a misunderstanding, really.
I wouldn't attack on sight if someone wasn't responding either, just for the record, no matter what race or RP reason there is. Could be the person crashed too.

Makes sense to me too. (shame on me for trying to make a long response. <slow typer too>)
I actually like the idea of not needing to warn some one before attacking. But i dont want to be wrong in doing it. My luck i would get banned.
((server i played NWN1 on, if you didnt give 3 warnings. was a violation))

Tip for people. If you're in a combat area against PCs or NPCs break up your typing. This way the others know that you are saying something, and there is less chance of this happening.
I haven't actually talked and then started fighting with someone so I don't really know how this works. The only time I've killed someone was when they attacked me or if they stole from me and they don't respond to me shouting "HALT! Give it back!"

I have never been big on attacking other players so it would have been hilarious t see myself when this began.
("oh crap"...use HIPS get out, crap my char is firing back. Use <s> key to back up. use HIPS... its not backing up, why..... use the mouse to break off attack... ok, HIPS... dang i'm firing again... use <s>.... not working... etc... this went on for a while.... I am sure i looked (in person) like a chicken with his head cut off trying to get out of there. lol

Nothing wrong with it.

Eventually you learn how long people wait, I usually count to 10.

I'd wait longer. Seriously. Some people type slow.

From my personal experience with PVP, I will always give a "I don't like you" notice before attacking. It's just common sense courtesy, see other posts about "it's a real person behind the IC character".
Especially in the situation where everyone is standing around not doing anything. Maybe a person just got out of the battle and needs a full rest to put up a fair fight.

I tried to respond with more than "no" about working with the thieves. I wasnt typing a book, but i do type slow on this laptop (small keys big fingers). So if a count of 10 is too long i would be over time limit on about anything but. "yes" or "no" conversations.

Yes. Patience with online responses is the best.
Edit: I must also add, if you play a drow- I would expect pvp. Esp if you are outnumbered. I know my girl is always nervous if a drow is around, you never know what those crazies are going to do.
