Question regarding PvP and roleplay

Well, I just had an episode that left me a bit annoyed. I need to know if I have any reason to be annoyed at all, or if this is all within how things should be here on the server. Let me clarify.

I am in the Kalam Brotherhood dungeon, working my way through to Guardsman Ivar so I can get what I need for my quest from him. In there is another character, and my character says "hello". The other fellow just says "get out", and "because otherwise I will hurt you".

Ok. So my character isn't interested in fighting one of the many adventurers that are obviously down here (I knew he was not "with the Kalam" because he had been fighting them as well), especially as he is trying to complete a quest. So I leave the room and hope not to run into him again. In another room I start fighting a minstrel. Halfway through that fight, this other player has his character sneak attack me in the back while I'm still on the minstrel.

The fight goes on for a while, as neither of us can get the upper hand. My character's first reaction was "What the hell?" and the other fellow roleplays "I live to fight!". Eventually, the fight suddenly stops. He says something like "got me" and that the fight wasn't going anywhere and that he will find me another time and attack me again. After that I thankfully don't see him again.

My question then. Is this griefing, or is the roleplay he did adequate for him to attack me like in the situation above? I thought had pretty clearly marked that I wasn't interested in his pvp "roleplay", by simply walking away. He then followed me into another room and attacked.

I'm not particularly upset with the guy personally, I just think the roleplay was extremely poor, and not very fun at all. And I want to know what griefing really means, because all I felt was that he disrupted my game.

If I'm way wrong here, I'll have to rethink my expectations of roleplay on the server.

He didn't seem to be greifing to me. Actually, his character gave you a warning which your character ignored. He did what he said he was going to do, and conflict ensued. It went OOC when you both stopped fighting. No idea why this story is an issue. Did it cost anyone anything? Did interaction really disrupt your fun?

To me personally it would be some level of griefing if he didn't set you to "Dislike" before attacking you. I think it's a fair game mechanic for evil characters to use before they attack another PC.

In your situation, it's better for the DMs to solve this and not start another 6 page campaign about it. Take a screen shot, PM Jeh or Wyv and they will quickly reply to you. We are just players and our opinions don't matter much.

I hardly ignored it when I left the room he was in, did I? Or do you mean I should evacuate the dungeon for him? And I have no idea why the fight suddenly stopped. I certainly did nothing to stop it (thought I was doing quite well againt him actually). And after the fight stopped we did not go OOC. He just made some more threats and left.

Personally, I think this kind of one-sided rp is rather cheap. And I'm not sure what I had thought about this place if I had been a new player.

And it is an issue because I felt confused enough to ask about it. I wanted to know if this episode was all fine, because as I said, if so I need to rethink my expectations. Is that any clearer?

PS. I'm not sure if he had me on "dislike". How can one tell?

It's legit RP, albeit annoying.

The best answer I can think of is to nail the bugger next time you see him. He already said he's going to do the same to you next time he sees you, so it's not like you're not justified.

You'd get a message in yellow bright letters that so and so dislikes you know. You do that by going to the Player List, and clicking the sword icon next to their name. Then that person turns red if you mouse over them and you can attack them at will.

Well, what I mean is....your character met another character in a dangerous, hidden guild of assassins, right?

This stranger said, 'you had better leave this place or I am going to hurt you." This was IC or OOC? I assume it was IC. I as a player, choose to view any ambiguous statements as IC.

You walk one room away, and he then attacks you when you are at your weakest, most vulnerable.

No, it wasn't griefing. The situation presented itself to your character, and your character disregarded it, hoping that moving one room away would keep this obviously violent and dangerous person from carrying out his threat. His attack was forewarned, whether he put you on dislike or not.

You chose to stay in harms way. Or your character did.

Open up the player list and you'll see a Shield and Sword next to everyone's character/player name.

If it says "Neutral" next to them they are not set to dislike, and it should have the shield highlighted.

If it says "Hostile"(I think? Something like that) and they are red instead of blue when moused over along with the sword being highlighted, then they are set to dislike.

If you set someone to disliked, it will automatically set you to dislike for them and vise versa. Also it will tell you in the combat log screen that "so and so has set you to dislike".

Many spells on certain levels of difficulty don't effect neutrals etc and you MUST set them to dislike for it to work. No idea what level of difficulty Das is set at right now though.

Reading Grayle's second post, it makes sense to me and I can see the point in this. Thanks for further explanation, Grayle.

It doesn't sound like there was any breach in the rules. I will agree with you that the roleplay involved does sound fairly weak (if that was indeed the extent of it). Remember though, that the server is full PvP for a reason. It does provide that element of danger. It is why the PvP setting is displayed in the gamespy listings. It should be factored into the decision making process when a player is looking for a server, and understand the consequences that PvP brings.

Some players are PvP heavy, and may be weak on roleplay. Not everyone is very good at it. Maybe in your next encounter with him, you could try harder to engage him in dialogue (even while you are fighting). Remember also, if you thought you had the upper hand during your engagement, just because he breaks it off, it doesn't mean you have to. If he truely doesn't want to roleplay, and you can beat him at his own game, then do it. Sometimes a lesson learned the hard way is the best way to learn. It would have also resolved the issue with who has the right to be there, because you could have requested that he left the area for an hour under the server rules.

Situations such as this are usually worked out fairly easily. If you get confused over a particular situation, communication is always the best way to sort things out. You can roleplaying IC, chatting OOC via tells, and PvPing all at the same time in most cases to ensure everyone involved knows what is going on and where everyone stands.

There's no such thing as non-consensual RP.

Sure there is...

A mysterious stranger steps out of the shadows. While Raymond is engaged with yet another citizen who is refusing to sheath their weapon within the city limits, the stranger quickly tosses a handful of strange, noxious dust in Raymond's face. Within seconds, his skin starts to peel off, and he dies an agonising death as his flesh is literally stripped from his bones. The stranger walks away, a small smile playing across his face, he is never seen again. The end.

Alright. Thanks all for your views on the matter. At least I know what to expect now.

Lol, thanks for the multiple explainations, Wyv. I'm looking forward to that DM client and some unexpected situations to challenge my role-play reactions.

Good luck Anders. Expect the unexpected! :D
