Hiding / stealthing

As in the topic. How does it work?
If I chose hiding as my primary skill and trained it a lot, would I be (while using it) invisible to other PLAYERS ?
If yes, what does it depend on? My hiding skill vs someone's else listening + spot skills ?
Thanks, folks
Chris

I have had limited experiance with 'dissapearing' to other player chars. I can do it..With bard song running, cat's grace, and being around a corner when they hide versus someone with low spot/listen.
This only started happening around level 8 though. So apprelty base spot/listen is high enough to detect anything below that in hide/MS.

there is also an obsidian bug in regards to hiding from friendly PCs, you still show up on screen.

The thing is that when your hiding/sneeking your working off your base rank +d20+stat where as everyone else is doing spot checks at d20+rank+stat.
So if your level 1 with 18 dex thats +4, +4 ranks +d20 a max of 28.
however if you roll low and they roll high, which is likely your spotted.
As you go up however and your ranks get higher its increasingly unlikely to be spotted.

So , as I understand - if I'm very good at it, others can't see me ? Simply great. Topic closed.

Yes, but as muletang said theres apparently a bug that even if you hide roll succeeds other players can still see you on their screen..

Yes there is a bug and players just see a ghosted image of you and so know where you are making hiding fairly, ok totally useless against players. I am hoping that this gets fixed in 1.04 as it is apparently on their to do list.

Hmmm a related thing; I play with 'auto-fade' of objects off, because I like to get the impression I'm hiding on the other side of the tree. Does anyone else find it annoying that others could be playing with it on, therefore making it almost pointless to try finding hidey places?

I think what is being called a bug is actually just a failed hide or move silently check. Those checks occur every round and it takes great skill to remain undetected. Nobody on Dasaria is yet skilled enough to go undetected, so it's being called bugged.
I ran a test module using a character with maximized stealth skills. He was able to remain hidden from another PC. Like Zephis pointed out, opposing rolls are made to determine detection. Unless your stealth skills are greater than 20, it's possible to be detected.

hehe teaches me to go around talking like I know what I'm on about without verifying it for myself.

- I browsed it in the bug forum once and have taken it as such ever since *grin* sorry to mislead you Alander.

i could see it being a bug with friendly. try setting someone you can see stealthed (and is actually skilled in it) to enemy (or whatever its called, i think its on the player list) and see if the player is still visible.

What is being called a bug it's really a bug (or a design decision made by Obsidian, at least)
Even if a succesfull roll is made, and you get to hide yourself, other PC's can see you
Surely they cant target you, but people see your avatar on their screen
It works fine with NPCs although. If you hide they cant see you, and the same goes for them (just try the kalam brotherhood quest...you attack someone, and out of nowhere a bunch of rogues appear attacking you.
Even working (or not) this way, i think it's worth taking ranks in this skill
I'm doing something similar with my warlock (its not hiding, i'm using a invisibility spell...but it shares the same issues) and dungeon crawls has just become waaay more entertaining. I can even solo a couple of compatible-level quests with a rather weak class

You know what's annoying? The rouges in Kalam are sneaking around and I can see them. So I shoot them with my bow to point them out to my party members (and avoid those nasty sneaks) and they still don't appear.

Where is Kalam anyway? And are those damn rouges pink or coral?
