What is in a name?

Just started a new character "X the Barbarian". The origin of the name is that "X" is a barbarian who could not sign his name when he arrived in Cear (he made his mark, an X, instead). A player sent me a tell saying my character's name was not appropriate and that I needed a "real" name for my character. I am interested to hear what others here think. I am perfectly willing to come up with a new name should that be the consensus.

He's still got a name, though, right? He doesn't introduce himself as "hi, I'm X the Barbarian" does he?

Dasaria provides an immersive, medieval fantasy environment where roleplay and in-character realism are encouraged. While we like to maintain a relaxed and fun style here, your character's name and background description has an effect on other players' experiences as they interact with you in the game and as such should respect certain guidelines:
- They should not interfere with the spirit of the fantasy genre or the context of Dasaria's story-line.
They may not include titles (Sir, Lord, King, Captain, Lieutenant) unless granted by a DM in the course of play.
They may not include curse, lewd, or potentially objectionable words in any language.
Other inappropriate names and/or exceptions to these rules will be handled according to the DM team's judgment.
Use of common sense in selecting a name appropriate to Dasaria should apply.
It does not contain any title, unless you claim that "the Barbarian" is a title. While although it is, it is also true, so I don't think it breaks a rule.
It doesn't contain any objectionable word (As far as I can tell).
As far as the first point goes, I'd say its perfectly in the realm of the Fantasy Genre (Conan the Barbarian is a Fantasy Hero afterall) and the fact he has bas writing skills does make sense. People will know him by his name when they meet him anyways.
So in all, in my opinion there is no reason to change your name, but if it is inappropriate a DM will tell you. Just have a name ready if they do.

He calls himself "Equis" and spells it "X". Why this is the case is something for folks to find out in character should "Equis" come to trust them enough to share his tale.

Only thing I can think of would be "They should not interfere with the spirit of the fantasy genre or the context of Dasaria's story-line." If everyone started walking around with their class in the name space it would look bad.

Does your character concept work just as well if his displayed name is Equis? You could always RP him signing things 'X' to perpetuate the tongue-in-cheek nature of your idea.

The character concept will work fine with "Equis". I thought "X" would be more attention grabbing. Seems that I was right about that but people are split over whether its a good thing. It is not my intention to make the natives restless so I will change the name. If people see "X the Barbarian" on again it will be for his run to the temple of Peralia.

It's really not a big deal. I certainly don't care if it says X or Equis above his head because our characters can't read it anyways.
