What is currently possible with exotic materials?

Post by gody »

Reading the posts in this forum I am a little confused as how exotic armors/shields/weapons can be enchanted.
That is what and how many enchantments can be applied to e.g. adamantine/mithral/cold iron etc. shields/armour?

To elaborate: There is a thread regarding adamantine shields which seem to be have been enchanted twice further
for at least 1 person in the past, but can only have one now. It the same thread it was suggested by a DM that
it might have been mithral. However in another thread it is reported, that mithral shields cannot be enchanted further
at all.
Furthermore, I have been told that adamantine weapons can only have 1 enchantment, consistent with the magic damage from adamantine counting as 1 enchantment.

Maybe somebody knowledgeable can spell out what is possible for armours/shields/weapons in Dasaria.
I believe this would be of interest to a more general audience, so I am posting this here rather than asking crafters directly.

Best Regards

Well think it was so that items have only 2 slots what can enchant and yes Adamantine counts all ready one off those enchant so it can only enchant once more. And yes mithrill shields cant enchant futher.

Everything is laid out here:

Dasaria Crafting System

and here:

Current Craftable Item List [Definitive]
Furthermore, I have been told that adamantine weapons can only have 1 enchantment, consistent with the magic damage from adamantine counting as 1 enchantment.
True, it can have 2 enchantments, like anything else. It already has one (magical damage) though, so there is only one additional enchantment slot available. Exotic metals' ability to bypass some forms of DR is not considered an enchantment, its an innate weakness to the nature of some creatures' DR.

Generally, there aren't exotic metals items in the loot pool. It's possible there's an exception out there somewhere, or that somebody has a legacy dropped item kicking around that has since been pared out, I wouldn't worry about it too much though.

thanks for the replies

just to clarify: as mithral shields cannot be further enchanted I am assuming the bonuses from mithral count as 2 enchantments. does that also hold for armour?

A mithral shield already has 2 item properties. It's not an exception, it actually follows the rule.

http://nwn2.wikia.com/wiki/Mithral
  • Armors weigh approximately half as much. This weight reduction does not count as an item propery, but is a change to the base item.
  • Shields weigh 60% as much as normal. This weight reduction counts as an item property.
  • Spell failure chances for armors are decreased by 10%. This decrease does not count as an item property, but is a change to the base item.
  • Spell failure chances for shields are decreased by 20% (to a minimum of 0%). This decrease counts as an item property.
  • Maximum dexterity bonus for all armors is increased by 2.
  • Armor check penalties for mithral armor are lessened by 3 (to a minimum of 0). This does not apply to shields.
  • Weapons made from mithral weigh 60% as much as normal. This weight reduction counts as an item property, and does not change a weapon's size category or the ease with which it can be wielded.
