Building a quest

Post by Karma »

Okay. So I have made lots of areas and items in my days of Nwn2 Development but I have never made a quest, dialogue or really done much scripting. I'm gonna try and make a quest for Das and see f you guys like it. What do I need to be aware of?

The other day I came across Friam Foal at Aucklorn who said he was waiting on supplies from Laul( the guy with a broken wagon in front of Cear) I was told hes a retired Pc. Can anyone give a bit of info about him while I brainstorm a quest to go and get the supplies hes waiting for?

My intent so far is for the following:

Level Range: 10-14

Quest Items: Supplies for Friam Foal (Weight; 40 pounds)(Description: This small heavy box appears to have a number of metal ingots in it. To the trained and inquisitive eye, one who peers inside would denote them to be Adamantium.)

Quest NPCS: Laul(North Cear), Friam Foal(Aucklorn Mill), Braeon the Bold (Coastal Thoroughfare)

Quest updates: WIP

Dialogue: WIP

The grand scheme of this is. You go to Aucklorn and talk to Friam Foal. He asks you if you would be willing to go and get the supplies he has been waiting for. You go to North Cear and get them from Laul. Once the Package is in your inventory, it triggers a spawn either in Cear farms on the road or on the Thoroughfare near the bridge. When the spawn is triggered it does one of those cutscene conversations. In comes Braeon the Bold, A bandit who heard you were getting the package somehow. He threatens you to leave with your life and not the package and you can respond a few ways. I plan to make a bluff, diplomacy, and intimidate options(Dc 25ish) with proper Alignment shifts(1-5 depending on whats said) And from there depending on whats said it has one of three options.

Thoughts?

Is Friam that dwarf wandering aimlessly near the shop in Aucklorn? Anyway, I think it's a good idea overall, mainly because there's already a quest that needs you to go to Cear and back, and as much as I dislike backtracking, it may feel less painful if you can complete two quests with that trip. I like the idea of the bandit and the possibility of avoiding a fight through the use of skills (regarding this, I'd give roughly the same XP - at least - from passing the dialogue check as you'd get from fighting).

Issues/things I might not like that much (kind of minor):

- Alignment shift: If you mean "proper" as in relation to the conversation skill which is used, I don't think such a thing exist. Intimidating good guys exist, as well as diplomatic bastards. If the alignment shift is unrelated to the used skill, then I have no issues with it. Also, I'm not sure if 25 DC may be a bit too high. I suppose it works, though a bit less could probably be all right as well.

- Weight of the supplies: It makes sense for them to be heavy, but it may be a pain in the *** for low or average strength characters to walk (and fight) encumbered from Cear to Aucklorn. Perhaps there could be an option to use an animal, a cart or whatever (similar to the cow in Morell)?

- Level range: 10-14 is fine for Aucklorn, but I *think* the ashes quest can be done before 10, so I'd use the same level range as that one, because of the aforementioned long trip to Cear/backtracking.

That's all I can think of right now. Good idea, I hope to see the quest in game soon.

The Aucklorn quests are all level 8 to 15. You should stick to that level range.

Adding to existing dialog isn't easy. The logic branches aren't often built to accommodate additional quests.

You should spawn Braeon via a trigger at the location of the intended encounter. And only spawn him if the player has the correct quest state. Spawn him areas away and another player will likely kill him.

Here are some guidelines for the DC of those skill checks.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/diplomacy.htm
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/intimidate.htm

Use alignment shifts sparingly. Opinions on alignment vary widely. You can't guess a players intention. A one point adjustment is usually enough to make your point.

We've probably already written the scripts to you need to pull off that quest.

The baker's son quest is from level 10, I think. Definitely not before. Just saying in case it's a bug.
