Gaming PC died... What to buy next?

Post by Wired »

My ASUS g73jh just went tits-up. Can get it to run with an external monitor in safe mode only, otherwise looks dead.

I will not buy another 17"... too %$*&#(* big ( too much hassle to get through airport security ).

Would love to run NWN2, more recent games, plus 3ds on a tablet/transformer using an external monitor when I can (carry one device with an image of my work laptop, but I'm not sure that's achievable even now).

What to buy? Money is no object.

If you are as lazy as me - this website tipped me off during my last purchase:

I'm digging my Asus ROG laptop. Runs any game, keeps cool, and not to pricey compared to alienware.

I have the 17.3, but this is a link to the 15 inch model. Can find them cheaper on amazon too.

Yesssss, I'm an ASUS fan. That may be it.

I need to do one dis/re-assembly this weekend to be sure, but having verified with external monitors / HDMI output & etc., it does look like it's the radeon and LCD that's dead. Can only get it going on an external monitor in safe mode.

Perhaps the time has come for my legacy cruft to go to SAN and to get to an endpoint that's easier to manage.

While I'm an ASUS fan, it was too obvious a gaming-PC to bring to work and one of my goals was to simplify down to one PC. I almost went to the Thinkpad Yoga, but I can't live with the on-chip graphics... feels like one more generation might be a sweet spot for a 'transformer.'

I ended up getting a (surprisingly cheap) Lenovo u530 i7 4510U @ 2GHz/nVidia GT730M which will now stealth as my BYOD work PC. Hope to be back in-game within a week or two... I'm an idiot and it's going to take me a while just to figure out this windows 8.1 thing, let alone get all my apps re-installed.

So far what I've learned is that most stuff is still where it used to be, but it just takes 5 more clicks to get there, which for win7 was 2-3 more clicks more than 2000. O.o

I've moved completely over to Win 8.1. Its not as bad as most people claim it is, and it seems to run better then Win7 does.

My suggestion: commonly used programs, just make desktop icons. My desktop basically lives in desktop view, and functions more or less like Win7 did 90% of the time. When I need a program that's not on my desktop, instead of trying to find it on the Start Menu, I use the Search function, which seems more powerful and capable than any Search in previous Windows.

If your new computer has a touch screen, the Tile interface is really good. I have a Surface 2 Pro for my mobile non-gaming use (though technically I could probably run NWN2 just fine on it), and love its touchscreen interface and ease of use.

One final note: some older games may need to be run in compatibility mode or administrator mode. NWN2 needs admin mode if you run the Client Extender, and I have run into a few games that need one of the compatibility modes set to run (though they are few and far between).

NWN2 needs admin on W7 too, fyi. It's retarded, but true. At least on my rig. Other programs don't, so i don't think it's enforced by my setup.
