Fine world. Bad rpg.
Hello there, Dasarians. I just wanted to share one of my thoughts.
I've joined Dasaria few days (about a week) ago. From what I saw on the server, it's one of the best nwn2 rpg worlds currently available. To tell the truth, it's the best (rpg) world I've ever played on. Sure, it's beta and it's very, very small - and somtimes it's also boring. As far as the rpg goes - it's the best though...mostly because of the dms that interact with players all the time.
There're some "buts" as well though. The biggest one is low rpg level of players. What's really sad, the worst rpg comes from the oldest players on server. Mabye it's because they saw everything and they're simply bored ( as I said earlier ). I'm not talking about language issues. I'm not from England or US myself - I make mistakes. I'm talking about other things.
1. OOCing far too much. Almoast all the time. Yesterday I wasn't able to talk normally to my friend because every 5 seconds there was //, // ,// ,// ,// , (( , )). Scary.
2. Switching characters , transfering items between them without even trying to cover that fact. Openly talking about it or even asking "//" for help to do that.
3.Bumping on guards ( here I'm talking mostly about new characters) if they see that there is the slightest possibility of guard interacting with a player. Sometimes it's not about RPG. Sometimes dm (in a guard form) is called to solve a problem. Yes, it's a rpg form. Questions "what's up", "what's wrong here", "what happened", "have you seen my friend" , "nice cloak, guard" ... are really really annoying. Yes I know. They could be defined as rpg as well but ... for the love of God...argh!
4.New job - I'm a guard now! Most young players seem to take over the guards duty and job. The best example. Many young characters do not holster their weapons in town. It's a pretty good idea to inform them that it's forbidden to wear any weapons within town boundries. Really good idea BUT stop overreacting. Yesterday I witnessed a situation when a young character bumped on the other one. It was about wearing the weapons. The exact form of informing someone that it is forbidden was something like this:
"HOLSTER YOUR WEAPON AT ONCE OR YOU WILL END UP IN PRISON FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!"
Lol? What the hell ? Is he a guard now ? Rpg? Mabye. Still -- very , very annoying, as most of the new players seem to do that.
Sometimes the best way to rpg is not to become a lawful *future* hero supporting the guards and using the quotes from well known books. Yesterday one of the old characters spoke to me. Actually he quoted nearly whole page of George r.r Martins "Game of Thrones". He wanted to sound noble and inteligent I guess. That was really pathetic. There were no "" of course.
The reason I'm writing this is not the fact I think I'm the best rpger ever. Frankly speaking I'm one of the worst I've known ( excluding 80% of Dasarians ). I'm writing this just to remind you that this is just Beta-Testing. It's like what? 5% of the real Dasaria II size? So it will take you 95% more time to get bored on the real server ? It will be the same. It'll just take more hours to come to it. If you're bored - please don't play. Or keep the high level of the game. If we actually can't stay high at Dasaria beta Test - what makes you think it'll be done when real Dasaria comes out ?
ps. No spams, no flams please. Yes I know, I suck.
Thanks,
Chris.

Re: Fine world. Bad rpg.
There's no DM interaction as of yet since there's isn't a working DM client. The client version as of 1.03 still crashes the server when the DM tries to leave the area, possess creatures, spawn objects or pretty much do anything. Because of that, there are no DMs on.Alander wrote:...mostly because of the dms that interact with players all the time.
I think by oldest you actually mean highest level - there's a pretty well known rule that the highest levels will tend to be on the powergaming side of the fence as it were. The oldest players on Dasaria are actually all strong roleplayers, it is why they stayed on from Dasaria 1. There are also a number of very good new players who RP, perhaps you haven't met them.Alander wrote:There're some "buts" as well though. The biggest one is low rpg level of players. If it bothers you, tell them to take it to Party or Tells. It's what I would do. Or simply try to find someone who isn't doing it, there are people like that around.Alander wrote:1. Agreed on that. Poor play.Alander wrote:2. Switching characters , transfering items between them without even trying to cover that fact. Openly talking about it or even asking "//" for help to do that.
I'm not sure what you're complaining about here. The fact people do as they would do in reality - talk to the authorities?Alander wrote:3.Bumping on guards ( here I'm talking mostly about new characters) if they see that there is the slightest possibility of guard interacting with a player. Again, there's no DM interaction in the forms of guards since there aren't any DMs at this time for the reasons given previously. Any guards you can interact with are player characters, played by some players. These individuals applied to join the guard and were given permission by the DMs to do so.
Then you clearly haven't read or adapted to the setting of the world very well. Varana, the empire of which Cear is part of is a very totalitarian and ruthless one. People have order at the price of losing their freedom and this is probably more true in provinces like Cear which were only 50 years ago part of the Dasarian kingdom - a bitter enemy of Varana.Alander wrote:Really good idea BUT stop overreacting. I actually think this is very well played by the guards. If anything, they should be more ruthless. As always, ignorance is no excuse and that sure as tomorrow isn't going to stick in Varana's lands. This is a land where you would expect a child to be publicly hanged for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sick five year old sister.
The problem is that since there's no DM client and content creation is slow, it will take time for Varana's vileness to surface. But things will change once the DM client is fixed and as more content is slowly added.
To be honest, server size doesn't impede roleplay. Why would it? I know of at least one character who never even left the city and was a very strong pressence. This was achieved solely through RP. I realise English isn't your irst language, so I'm having trouble understanding what you actually mean by staying high as I'm sure you don't mean weed. You could try it I suppose.Alander wrote:It's like what? 5% of the real Dasaria II size? So it will take you 95% more time to get bored on the real server ? It will be the same. Valid concerns of initial impressions, but you gotta remember people are finding their feet in both a new world and, for many, RPing entirely. You kind of answer your own questions - once there is more world and development of areas and more importantly a direction in which story lines can develop with greater detail then you won't be getting this kind of thing, the whole scope will change.
At present it is just a waiting game, I'm selling whips at a very reasonable price specifically for DM goading - they just aren't working hard enough -
jump into the toolset to try and help out with what is obviously a time consuming, thankless and frankly daunting task.
Stick with it, try to lead by RP example while out in the field, from experience the end result is sooo worth it.

I don't feel any shame, I won't apologise

1.Agreed. I meant guards, not dms.

I guess you didn't get what I meant. I didn't mean the guards. We all agree that they SHOULD be very strict and even attack players that disobey...
I meant NORMAL players that are NOT in the city guard , that act like they were. Leave the guard duty to the guards. You, of course , can inform other characters of something BUT you shouldn't act like you actually could throw others into Gaol. That's what I wrote.
I know that the high level does not mean long history on Dasaria. But, believe me, characters I'm talking about played on Dasaria I and ARE actually old ones.

Right. I would never complain about DMs work if I don't help. And I didn't.

Once more - i am not complaining about the server. Dms did hell of a job. I'm just talking about players. That's the issue.

Only two characthers posseses the job as a city guard.
Which is Guardsman Raymond carth (beyond redeemption)
and Guardsman Tren Kelteelen ( me ).
Very guardsman will be useing his armor and WILL have the Guardsman in his name. if no he's not a guard.
so new citizens who try to attempt to be a guard, just report it to the forum, PM to jeh who will either poke us guards about to chase this guy down for breaking the law about impresonating imperial forces.
or they'll get the visite of a rather angry npc sergeant or captain (dm'characthers) who will likely deal with this.
remember alander, somone saying they'll throw you in the gaol who inst a offical guard will get issues, the only case they can is to advice you to holster the arms, and remind you that the guards can get quite nasty,
however they cannot physical do anything, vigilism is a crime itself in the varana empire.
unless the person has a said bounty on his head (Which so far only has happend once from a dm-npc characther who bountied a greifer).
apart from that there's been no case where a citizen can impose anything else but friendly words uppon another.

And that is exactly what I said. "Please holster your weapons, the guards may throw you in Gaol" I didn't mean that as, "The guards can now and will now throw you in Gaol". I wasn't even talking to you in the first place, if you get angry about what I said to someone else who seemed fine with I really can't stop you.
Also need I remind you of a previous occasion where you whispered in my ear that "I should watch my back", that may be the reason why I'm somewhat rude and impolite to IC.

Eee? I wasn't talking about you ?
I was talking about someone else.
But that reminds me of yesterdays situation that you are probabbly speaking of, when you actually acted somewhat simillary to what I wrote. But no, you did it according to RPG rules. It's ok. As I said. It's not post about you. If it was I would write your name.
Please, don't offtopic. My whispers have nothing to do with the topic here. You're not the center of the world , really
ps. I whispered : "you will end up ten feet under ground".
Yes it was rpg.
No it wouldn't be a reason to threat to others.
Once again. Not about you. Please stay on topic

Re: Fine world. Bad rpg.
No idea what you mean by this statement. I think a language barrier is complicating what you hoped to communicate with this entire post, other than to say that many people logging into the Dasaria server aren't very consistent role-players. Yep. It's true. It's improving, however. Of all your points, I only feel the first one is of much significance.Alander wrote:The reason I'm writing this is not the fact I think I'm the best rpger ever. My only advice would be to be patient. This campaign is very new and no DM Client means the DMs can't get in-game and 'steer' player behavior in the desired direction, as far as role-playing and motivation.
Soon, soon.

If higher level characters think "good rp" is strong arming lower levels, they are in for a wake up call soon. If people are running around acting like guards when they are not, then they hold no authority. The IC guards also are not acting in place of the DMs. They should be acting to uphold Cear's IC laws, in an IC fashion. I will also be driving to stamp out excessive OOC chatter in the general chat as and when I hear it. As has already been stated, keep it IC, or keep it to the private channels.
I'm sorry your experience hasn't been of the standard that you expected. We will be working hard once we get a stable DM client to improve the campaign integrity, and enforcing server rules far more effectively.
It really will be a wake up call for some. Just give us time.

Good RP would be a lower level strong arming a higher level
I don't mean 11 strongarming a 12. I mean level 1 putting the fear of the law into a level 15. But that's just my opinion.
If you could. Keep at it. I'm sure you'll see the diamonds in the ruff so to speak.

I was there when that happened. And I must say, in my 3 weeks of playing on Dasaria, i've never seen anything this bad. You may remember me /telling you, asking if they always talked OOCly in local chat. It was pretty odd, espiecally since the Dwarf seemed to be making IC remarks OOCly, if that makes any sense.1. OOCing far too much. Almoast all the time. Yesterday I wasn't able to talk normally to my friend because every 5 seconds there was //, // ,// ,// ,// , (( , )). Scary
Anyway, I was in their party at the time, because they invited me to go to the Tower, and I asked them to keep their OOC banter in [Party] Chat, but they didn't even acknowledge me. A few minutes later they talked about making new characters and the party disbanded.
