roleplaying a repeated quest

Post by happydictates »

yesterday i finally got the chance to venture through the kalem tunnels with the aid of two other characters. i enjoyed the chance to finally RP a bit and each of the three characters brought different personalities and actions to the group.

i am new to roleplaying, and do not know how to approach the following scenario: if i were going through the kalem tunnels again, doing the same quests and end up grouping with the same people, how do i act? i know that question is incredibly vague, so ill explain.

last night those whom i grouped with were constantly prodding walls in search for traps or secret doors, getting more emotional at certain events, etc. if all of us know we've encountered the secret door, trap, or event before, do we still approach it as though we never had, or do we act as though we now know the area, saying something like "i remember a secret passage being over here."

again, im fairly new to all this and just want to learn how to make dasaria more engrossing, so please take it easy on me if im sounding stupid :?

That's up to you.

If I've been there once with a certain character then I act like she knows what is there.

If it's a different character of mine, I pretend I've never been there.

That's just me, but it makes sense to me to do it that way. The problem would be coming up for a reason to be back down there. But I'm sure you can do that.

"Oh, er... I left my coat.." hehe j/k

When visiting a quest area again, I often go with the "they weren't killed last time, but slipped away and now we're here to finish the job" idea. Works well enough to help suspending disbelief, for me at least.

When waiting for a quest monster to respawn, I usually go with "they're hiding somewhere, and we just have to wait until they think the coast is clear and come back out".

"Dana just can't keep ahold of that damned heirloom, can she?"

"Aw, they kidnapped your 34th wife? Bugger.. "

"Farmer Cobb broke his plow AGAIN? What's he plowing, the tombstones?"

I just pretend each time I'm there is the 1st.

It's a little wierd but I've been doing it so long I'm over it.

I just go with the flow, try not to mention it and if it comes up then make a viable RP excuse. IE: didn't kill them the first time, someone took their place etc. RPers aren't stupid we know that its just a game and that everything doesn't fit perfectly with RP, it doesn't have to be a stubbling block.

Edit: A tougher situation I find is how to RP player deaths and respawns. I usually just act as if they were KOed and mention something about how it wasn't my/their time to die if it comes up. :)
