Be forewarned: I may impersonate you!!

Post by ErictheRed »

Ok, I was a little bored with my main character and decided that I wanted to try something new, so I'm going to play a Rogue/something build. The catch is, I'm going to pretend to be someone's long-lost cousin! Think of it this way:

I just made it into Cear, and have only enough gold for a room at the Mistyvale Inn. That night, while thinking about my situation, I hit on a brilliant idea...pretend to be related to a well-known, well-liked person! I stay up all night asking patrons at the inn about the person, so I get a little background info, and say goodnight. The next morning, I introduce myself as "John Doe", where Doe is the last name of the person who I'm pretending to be related to! I might ask his/her friends for money, items, help, etc. etc....until I get caught, of course.

So I'm posting this here as a warning; someone WILL be getting impersonated in the next week or so. My only problem is this: the name. What if I name myself after their last name; would that be okay? Because I don't think anyone can change names without deleting a character (though I could be wrong). As far as I can see, anyone can come into Cear and give the authorities a fake name, but I don't want to upset the person I'm pretending to be related to OOC.

Then again, it happens all the time in real life that many people share names like Smith, Martin, Jones, etc., and they aren't related at all. So maybe I could RP it as coming into town and being pleasantly surprised that I share the same last name as a prominent figure. Hence, my rogueish mind starts thinking of ways to use this to my own advantage.

This will certainly not be my "main" character (that's Turin), but I just wanted to give everyone fair warning so that people don't give me OOC tells saying: "You have to change your name, that's MY last name."

Comments? Sound like fun?

P.s. Consider this a case of imitation being a sincere form of flattery.

If you are going to directly impact someone else's character, I would advise you discuss your plans with that person before you proceed. They may not be happy with it, in which case, you should find someone to work with.
It's just a game...

Well the reason I posted it is because, as Wyv said, I'm going to be affecting someone else's character and I want to make sure it's in a fun, positive way. That said, I don't really want to let the exact person know that I'm going to impersonate them, because that will take out some of the surprise. Hmm...

Perhaps I'll have to do a compromise and not give myself a last name, or maybe a last name that is phonetically similar but not identical. I'll think about it some more...

As I said, I don't anticipate this character being a "main" character for myself for more than a week or two, so after that I may just never play the character again to avoid future naming issues. But then again, you never know how attached you get to a character...

If you are ever going to do anything like that with one of my characters then please 'don't' tell me about it ... it will be more fun working it out in game :D

Unless you 'really' wana be my long lost cousin or what ever ..

Sounds like a fun idea. It wouldn't bother me at all.

hehe, what Judas said. Be prepared for the unexpected though and to roll with the punches that the not so happy might issue.

ErictheRed, you might have some difficulties since many players don't even bother with last names; they're all one-name rock-stars.

However, I applaud your idea, your attitude and especially your willingness to communicate before impacting other player's characters. Implied or explicit consent should be the basic requirement before doing anything that might impact another player.

For my own part, you would not need OOC-approval with any of my present or future characters to impersonate a relative. I'm sure you could "inform" me of what you're doing entirely IC (successful skill checks permitting).
Every "balance" post you submit, makes the baby Jesus cry.

The only thing that would really bother me as a player is attempting to impersonate another player (not their cousin). I've seen this in other games, and it can get ugly. For example:

DON vs D0N and stupid crap like that

Wouldn't this kind of be in violation of the spirit of this Server Rule?
Account Sharing

Account Sharing is a Violation of Server Policy

It is against the server rules to share an account or characters with other players. Dasaria is a story-based persistant world and each character is a part of that story. We consider it a compromise of the integrity of the server to allow this to go on.
I'm always right. I'm also a jerk. It's not my fault you can't get over the latter to see the former.

Hurray for Me!

Topic titles are like turn signals. They aren't for your benefit, but for the people around you.

Delemont, the character I'm planning on pretending to be related to does have a last name. My characters don't usually though.

Broncoblitz: I don't think it'd be in violation of that rule at all (and Wyvern didn't seem to think so, either). This has nothing to do with account sharing, I'm not logging on to another player's character or sharing one of mine with another player. Did you misunderstand my post?? I'm talking about roleplaying a con artist who is pretending to be a long-lost relative of a particular character; that's all. The main reason I made this post is because I'm not sure I should use the character's exact last name or not when I make my character.

As an aside, I haven't actually seen my "mark" in-game for a while, come to think of it...hmm...I hope they come back soon.

Dy'nr is another good one, or G'Elle, especially if you're drow. :)

Well this whole thread is meaningless, because I haven't seen my "mark" in two weeks. I'm sure he's playing--he was a regular--but it must be with a different character.

Anyway I just decided to roll up a Rogue and wait and see...
