can´t believe the dragon lnce series was mentioned only once, absulotely nice fantasy books with really well-worked-out , interesting characters.
As for Non-fantasy, try Jack Kerouac and Thomas Pynchon, both have such a nice way of writing. Best books (to my mind) are "On the road" (Kerouac) and "Gravity´s Rainbow" (Pynchon).
Enjoy, stoned-raider

Tolkein's new one might be worth looking at. It has been finished by his son, who has spent the last 30 years putting it together.

Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion
Jean Dominique Bauby - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (read it years ago and gave it a deserved second go the other day - very good)

I don't feel any shame, I won't apologise

Tin,
you may think that I'm a little crazy recommending this, but the The Classical World is a great read. Comprehensive, witty and easy to read, Robin Lane Fox is not your staid, boring academic, but is a very, very good stortyteller of a difficult and complex subject. I read this over last Xmas and couldn't put it down

I am loving every minute of the Nightside Novels by Simon R. Green, and just thought I should share it with everyone.
If you're a fan of Blue Moon Rising, you'll love it. Private Eye detective-esque action coupled with the darkest corners of London featuring gods, angels, devils, demons, and everything in between.

"Do you think I could get away with another beauty spot?"
"Any more beauty spots and people will think you've got the plague."
I stumbled on a SF action series that I have been having a great time reading! It's by David Weber and it's the Honor Harrington series. The protagonist is a strong female starship captain with a pet telepathic "tree -cat". Lots of fun to read, great characters and lots of white knuckle space battles. Yeah, sounds corny, but it is really good.
