No, -4 AC use to be a good thing. It meant almost untouchable.

-10 was the lowest a player character could go in the original ruleset, I believe. That's the equivilent of wearing +5 everything.

Of course, house rules usually let your AC get even better than that (by which I mean, go lower than -10), so I think that -10 limit was eventually removed.

This was all a long time ago for me and I was younger then, so I could be wrong. But I remember the days of THAC0! The details are just a little fuzzy.

I was harsh with giving out equipment so it would have been unusual for anyone in one of my campaigns to have anything below 0 ac. Healing potions were also rare and don't you try drinking more than one potion at a time.
