Anyway...
While recovering a few traps smeared with liquified rat droppings, a thought occured to me - it itself, quite an event:
Would it be possible to see a way of breaking up a craftable item (armor, weapon, trap) to determine the recipe required for making it?
I would imagine it to be based on appropriate skill, with the difficulty being perhaps a few points lower than the actual crafting of such an item would require? After all, it is easier to take things apart than put them together without a handfull of components remaining, or things going "boing!" into dark corners of the room...
Obviously, items which are not craftable would not be possible to break in such a manner.
As a secondary consideration, perhaps there would be a chance of recovering some of the components used?
It -is- meant to avoid the necessity of the trial and error method (assuming one can appropriate whatever they mean to make) - I get a headache thinking about the combination numbers for traps - but it still takes into account the skills required, and goes beyond just handing out the recipes.
One would need to have both an item they are interested in as well as the skill points to successfully roll the opposing check (please note, that is still with a possibility of failure always present) just to learn what is required to craft the item. Also, if this is considered unwelcome, there could always be a choice of cutting off higher level items (such as +4 and above enchantments) from this process altogether.
Just throwing out the random ideas rattling in my head, on account of being absolutely terrified of having to go through gods know how many hours just to make a decent trap
