UMD question

Post by Hvrankel »

Hi. Im thinking about taking the UMD skill. I have read about it in charactersheet. But I dont really understand it. Let say I want to use a level 2 scroll and I only have 5 in the skill. If there is a diceroll I might be able to use it because the DC is 15.
Or do I need 15 in the skill to be able to use the scroll?
Anyone who knows?

UMD DC for scrolls is 25+Spell Level

Disregard what the skill description says. It explains how UMD for scrolls should work in 3.5, but in NWN1/2 it's just 25+Spell Level.

A level 2 spell scroll will have a DC of 27, so with a skill of 5 you won't be able to successfully use it.

How is it for items? Last I read it was 5+x for class items, 10+x for race, and 15+x for alighnment, where x is a general gold amount table, where 100 is 5 and 1000 is 10 and 40000 is 15 or something. Or am I completely wrong and these are old rules?

Just a quick reply
D20 roll +skill for scrolls
For wands final skill = 20- - - some wands are higher - - expect to reach that skill lvl at lvl 9 (lvl+3 skill ranks +assorted bonuses stat and otherwise)(i can post more specifics if you want, one tiem +4 to skill; min lvl 9)
other items - monk boots, evil only weapons, ranger only gear etc, is 5, 10 15 20 etc - - -but at final skill 20 to use wands i havent bumped into an item where my UMD was too low - rather my lvl was too low for item lvl restriction.

BTW wand creation on a bard (higher enough caster lvl to take feat - make wands and UMD as a class skill - can make cleric, druid, wiz wands with UMD and scroll of spell and of course have the UMD to use another classes wands)

Only rogues, Bards and warlocks have UMD as a class skill - - - i have read stuff where points invested in UND as a cross class skill are wasted - - - (unless have multiclassed into one of these classes - i would not recommend putting points into UMD unless got confirmation from a DM that works as a crossclass skill [or not])

From a post of mine on another forum- with some relevance

Did you know
______ if any class you have taken has a skill as a class skill - max lvl in that skill is lvl +3 - regardless of what class you are currently taking
______if a skill is crossclass cost two skill points to advance - even if is a class skill for another class you have (ie cost only depended on current class)
______if take able learner feat (any lvl) - all skills cost one skill point - and so able to take cross class skills at one skill point ({lvl+3}/2 max) or class skill (for any class you have) to lvl +3, even if that is not a class skill fro the lvl you have taken. (the exception being perform as can only take that skill when take a bard lvl)
______if take just one lvl of rogue can learn all rogue skills (search disable, open lock, UMD) to max, etc
______in NWN1 could save all skill points and spend them at the lvl you wanted (making taking a rogue lvl every second or third lvl, an easy way to gain those skills without being rogue every lvl)- - -NWN2 only allowed to save 5 skill points but have able learner feat - which is really cool as can even take skills which are crossclass to all your classes at cost of one.
______In My No very Humble opinion - - these facts make multiclassing for individual preference for toon build practical (ie every player is an indiviual and will individualize their choice of character design - - - .. . . . .. . . .. . . .. . . - - though the rorts in multiclassing and balance is a problem - - - which NWN2 to a certain extant . . . .. will address (D&D 4th ed made multiclassing much less of a rort))

I have never taken a Prestige class -- {they do not suit my style - - - which is another way to say i think they are a heap of spit and wouldn't take them in a pink fit - - - -- - there are prestige classes which have abilites i would want eg shadow dancer ---BUT requires two feats (dodge and mobility) which i would never take on a class with tumble (they are good feats and i take them on a classes without tumble) - - so taking a prestige class involves crippling that character ( at lvl 9 entitled to 4 feats and have to spend half of them on feats would never take for that toon design IS crippling) ditto for the other prestige classes [ie i am not prepared to pay the cost for the alleged benefit i would receive] - - I am sure that somebody find that they are acceptable {good luck to you }}.
Goes on to ramble about prestige class alterations not relevant to Dasaria
