For What We Stand

Post by Atharin »

Dozens - scores, even - of leaflets find their way to homes, bulletin boards, and establishments across the Dasarian province. Though many of them are quickly seized and disposed of by the authorities, their word spreads, and transcriptions are soon made by different parties, to be found by the discerning and curious.

Many definitions of the term "Rebel" have been made through the past decade, some of them even recognized by the Varanite rule. Most Dasarian folk know what "Rebel" stands for, more or less - and this is about what most of said Rebels know, as well. There have always been rumors of secret Dasarian movements seeking to overthrow and banish the Varanite brood from our lands. The truth is that there are and there aren't. The disorganized and varied opinions and beliefs of the various Dasarians make it hard to define what a Rebel is - and sometimes, who is and is not a rebel. Whether it is a matter of belief, sentiments to the old monarchy, or just a desire to live free - these disagreements have played in Varana's favor for long, and we Dasarians have not been able to surmount a successful, noteworthy revolt against our oppressors for twenty-odd years, since the Kingseeker Rebellion.

Rebels - a misnomer. A term coined by the Varanites and attributed to Dasarians who would seek - nay, think - to drive their unrightful rule away. A term that, if used often enough through the years, would give Varana a sense of legitimacy to their presence on Dasarian soil. Dasarian men and women of all ages and crafts are Rebels, then, if we are to use the term - for the desire for freedom and dignity are the chief concerns of a thinking mind.

Harken, then: We are of the last generation capable of restoring Dasaria's independence. The Varanites mingle and lord among us now, bent on wiping and diluting our culture, history, gods, and bloodline - still they toil away at burning every last book, taking every last woman. We cannot deny their presence now, but we can act to deny them a presence in our future.

This is, surely, a call to set aside our differences - whether we pledge ourselves to Siril's bloodline, or view the former-Queen as a traitor; Whether we pray at Dawn and call Marduk "king", or welcome the Druagan teachings. If we wish to live free as Dasarians, we must unite as Dasarians, and come to terms with what cannot be denied: that our differences amongst us are not so great as they are from the monster called Varana, and what it seeks to make of us.

There is no doctrine, save for the desire to re-establish ourselves as a nation. This society is not a secret, though circumstances will often force our hand to work in secret ways. We must let it be known in every city, every street, every home - that things are going to change, and this change can be brought about by them.

Know this: Their armies waver, their numbers falter. The Canite menace has taken it's toll upon the Varanite war machine, and they are far outmatched and outnumbered by our very own, in our own lands. This is the time. We cannot wait to see the threat of Canas removed, lest they recuperate in the aftermath; Lest they breathe. Vagrant, child, mercenary, housewife, rogue, magus - all must join the battle against Evil, from within and without - Varanites and Canites as one. The former cannot be vanquished without the latter, and the latter cannot be vanquished with the former at large.

The long night is nearly over. Let us rise to a new dawn.

Another similar letter spreads, but it's words are very different, as is the style of writing...
We are sure, many of you have read the recent declaration of intent by the Man from Gulshire. In it he makes the claim that now is the time to rise up against Varana and overthrow their rule. He calls for unity against the Varanites, yet with the same breath calls for disunity against a far larger threat.

We speak, of course, of the Canites.

The Man from Gulshire seems to think that an uprising now could be successful due to the weakened strength of the Legions, and that somehow Dasaria could be reborn. But ask yourselves: reborn for what? To immediately be sundered by the hands of the Canites?

Right now the only things holding the Canites and Kor orcs in check is the Legions and actions of brave individuals who stand against them, led by the Prince. If the Man from Gulshire truly looked at the situation, he would know that any action taken against him or by him would weaken the Legion's position, and strengthen the Canite's. If that happens, then the terms Varanite or Dasarian become moot, as the Canites care not what you call yourself, or to whom you pray to, they will simply slaughter everyone.

Could a reborn Dasaria hold off the Canites, or even have a victory over them? History shows that is not the case. Varana in it's prime struggles against them, and could Dasaria, with its smaller numbers and fewer resources do the same? The answer is obvious.

So we must humbly counter the Man from Gulshire who claims that now is the time to rise up with this simple though: rise up now, and you not only condemn the Varanite Empire, but the very land and people you claim to fight for. Who do you truly serve, Kadmiel Greywolf? We, the people of this land, or yourself? For in rising up now, you do nothing to serve us or the ideals which you claim to hold.

The days had cast dark clouds, the rain had seemed endless as it bathed the earth. In recent weeks up unto this very day events had occurred that shook the very core of life within and around the Cearian region. Tel'gothrim had begun to run rampant stirring the authorities to showcase their presence, perhaps the most esteemed man of the Lochwarian cloth had been presumed murdered. The worst of it all was the confusion of the part the Argentum Vigilo played in the rebellion of a former member, had he acted alone or had he help from the Prince's very own? The boarders began to heighten in attacks from Korian races, Canite portals had become increasingly more common. Was the area folding in on itself, had the people of Cear and it's neighboring regions become numb to what was succumbing them, what in fact was going on...

--------------------------

The sturdy dwarven defender stood silent, his dark red armor reflected the sun's rays off into the distance. Behind him a small regiment of maybe fourty dwarven warriors clad in full plate stood organized, wielding their axes and hammers with a striking fervor that could be felt through out the mass. The grunts of dwarven obscenities and battle cries rang a loud a top a large hillside outside Tristan. At the base of the hill a hundred or more hill giants had amassed, organizing themselves into small clusters of eight or nine, wielding giant boulders the size of large animals. The regiment of dwarven warriors had begun a trek towards Ravenwood, unfortunately a large army of hill giants had other plans incidentally.

The dwarven defender raised his great axe into the air with a mighty roar, enraging his kin as they erupted in a chorus of similar emotion. As the noise echoed throughout the valley the hill giants stirred with unease, they began to climb the hill towards their most loathed enemies.

Kyfier spoke aloud to his kin
"On this day our race will reclaim some of the honor we have lost over the centuries of opression and tyranny lashed upon us! On this day we fight in honor of our people and our heritage as dwarves! Let our faith in Etoth's will guide us down this slope of judgment, let him pave the fortunes of our names! Let us thrive in the chaos of this battle and lose ourselves in the fury of it all, let the gods envy our victory as we crush our enemy!!! Do not take mercy on their souls!!! WE ARE RYKEROIAN!!!!"

The elder of his clan lowered his visor as he lept forward in stride downhill, his clan steadily behind him thundering towards the army of hill giants, blood would cover the land this day, this was undoubtedly a fact.

----------------

Three days before the battle....

The rumors of rebellion had begun to spread rapidly through the region, the notion the empire was losing grasp of the eastern gem of their empire was not whole-heartily false. The fact people secluded themselves in home to discuss the recent letter from rebellious sources lent credence that at the very least people we're concerned with the oncoming of impeding dangers, the unknowing factor that plagued them daily. What guarantees would tomorrow bring?

Kyfier Redleafe sat at a small wooden table within Two-Bridges Inn, beside him his closest friend and dear kin Sully Redleafe.

Sully watched Kyfier's eyes steadily reach the end of the parchment he was reading, his face ever increasingly hardening as he finished the letter before him.

"Sully, I do not know why I see merit in this lone rebel Kadmiel Greywolf, but his passion and desire for change ignites a fire deep within me....perhaps dancing dangerously on conspiracy of treason....I want to meet this man, look into his eyes and read his soul. Will it tell me that my father's struggle all those years against the tyranny of Varana wasn't for naught? Am I just a fool for seeing the slightest of windows for retribution and cause? A battle rages within my mind...I am torn where we as the Rykeroians stand as people of this nation..."

Sully paused for a long moment, trying to think carefully before lending his wisdom to his Elder, his kin. Sully reached out and touched Kyfier's shoulder with a warming embrace.

"Kyfier, you have done our clan proud, you have done right by the Rykeroian peoples, you are our leader and we stand behind you. I do not know what tomorrow brings us, for if even there is a tomorrow for our race. Uncertainty brought us down from the mountains, brought us here. Perhaps we are ment to aid this Kadmiel, perhaps we are to be Etoth's extension, his instrument of judgment? I do not pretend to have the answers but in a time as such choices are made for the better and worse and the most concrete fact to life is we will all perish one day. Perhaps it is time we make our stand, lend our selves to this clockwork. I stand firmly behind you Kyfier Redleade, I always have."

The dwarves sat silently for many moments afterwards, choices we're made.

Standing just on the outskirts of Two Bridges, her tall figure draped in a black cloak that hid her startling features, Maeve read the letter circulated by Publicus. Only her churning green eyes seemed to bite though the shadow of her cowl as they followed the words. The night was cool on her skin and she breathed deeply. Many things had changed for her yet her optimism never faltered.

"Varanite garbage" She whispered to herself as she crumpled the letter in her armoured fist, "The ideals we stand for are indeed for the people. I hope they will see that. Marduk be willing there is no reason to ever wait for freedom."

"I will still fight Canas" she thought, tucking a strand of ashen hair back within her hood, "But that doesn't mean we have to allow ourselves to be walked upon like excrement underneath the Varanite boot."

Maeve raised her hand near a mounted torch, allowing the paper within her fingers to catch fire. The flames licked the paper hungrily and devoured the parchment completely, leaving only ashes in it's wake. As the ashes floated in the air, Maeve turned and walked in the direction of Tristan, the blackness of her cloak trailing behind her.

The man stood facing the letter which had been nailed, crooked, to the wooden lamppost. Rain pattered around him, its noise magnified to a booming upon his helmet with each drop. The storm had become a sort of drumming beat for the Ensign, its monotonous pattern broken only by the terrible tearing of the sky that mortals like himself had come to call lightning.

He had stood looking at the letter for what seemed to him a long time, but he had long since finished reading it. The man stood there not analyzing the treasonous public speech, but deciding upon it.

There was another great crack of thunder, and its bolt seemed to strike the man. The actual light of the phenomenon did not leave the sky, but the soul was stricken, nonetheless.

The Ensign tore the letter from the signpost, and walked through the rain to his apartment.

On A House Divided, and Claims of Idealism wrote:To our fellow Dasarians,

As we are sure you are aware, the Man from Gulshire claims his actions are in fact for the good of the people, and uses such terms as freedom to color with broad strokes the reasoning for uprising. They claim that this will be for the good of all Dasarians, and believe that somehow in the end the people will be better for it.

Unfortunately these beliefs are not backed by the historical record, nor are they believable claims in the present circumstances.

Let us again remind everyone of the issue of Canas. Some people seem to think that the Canite threat is lessened, or that somehow those involved in the uprising will be able to commit both to defeating the Canites and overthrowing the Varanites. Unfortunately, such thinking is idealistic, and not backed by the history. What history is this, many may ask?

It is tragic that we must refer people to what they already know of: the fall of the Kingdom of Dasaria. Many people are unaware of the history surrounding that, only being told what the Empire of Varana wants people to know, and perhaps some who's memories have dimmed. But if you talk to those who survived the war, and study history, you will quickly learn that the fall of the Kingdom was not just a major military victory for the Empire, but was the result of many years of constant internal turmoil of the Kingdom of Dasaria; especially with the struggle brought about by the powerful Nergalite Cult, as they were called, that forced the Kingdom to fight a two front war. We all know the results of that conflict.

So I must ask, why do they think these days will be any different? The Canites are equal the strength of the Empire, and so the Man from Gulshire's uprising could easily tip the balance in that war, forcing the Varanites to use forces to suppress them, but in doing so weakening their position against the greater threat. There is an old saying of the Brinthians: “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand.” We tell you, this is a truth, and that we cannot now afford to be divided against the Canites, lest we all fall.

As to their other claims, that their actions are for the freedom of the people. Perhaps under the Man from Gulshire's rule, people would have more freedom to worship as they choose, less taxes and other such idyllic dreams. People claim that is the case, but the Man from Gulshire is such an enigma we cannot know how he would do things, as his record is devoid of anything to judge by, his only publicly noteworthy activity being a member of the
Argentum Vigilo, which he has apparently renounced as he does not identify with them or use his title, and before that, as the tender of the graveyard in North Cear.

Regardless, we again question whether the results will be as they claim. If, in a somehow idealistic world, they manage to both win victories over Canas and the Varanites, and establish a new Dasaria, they have committed themselves to another ten generations of war with the Varanite Empire. Many people are keenly aware of the difficulties of those times, and while people were, perhaps, more free in some areas, they were hardly better off than they are now. In other scenarios, they only bring down new inquisitions, and renewed oppression of the people of this land, activities that had been dying out for years in this region. Need we remind everyone of the recent proclamation freeing the Thralls of the region?

We know that those who follow the Man from Gulshire are committed to his course, and while we do not believe that they will give fair consideration to our words, we beg of them to do so. Ask yourselves, why are you fighting? If it is only for high ideals or petty revenge, please consider patience, let time sort through these problems, not the sword, and focus on the greater and more serious threat, that is Canas.

Call it “rebel”, if you will, and discuss at length its meaning and implications as my compatriot from Gulashir has done; Kadmiel Greywolf has undoubtedly thought long on the future of a “rebel” in a land reeling under the heel of Varanite despotism, and he has made his decision. Moreover, he has made the right decision.

To the Empire of Red & Gold we are but rebels; our contemporaries (the illustrious “publicus”) imply we act for selfish reasons, and not with the people of this noble land in mind. It is one incorrect implication among many they have levied.

I shall dwell very shortly on the matter of this “Publicus”, for it is a subject that draws quite intentionally away from the heart of our cause: the liberation of this embattled land, and the resurgence and rebirth of that which was the Kingdom of Dasaria.

I have lived behind false names and pseudonyms for too long, and its practice grows to me tiresome and exhausting. My compatriots do not shy away from using the name they were given at birth; yet this “publicus” employs the most questionable pseudonym as a disguise: “the people”, he calls himself, in what can only be termed as the Varanite style. He seeks to usurp the name “Dasarian” in but a word.

It is this variety of opposition that would seek to label Kadmiel Greywolf and his compatriots “rebels”, those who engage in “rebellion”, and those who would seek to “rebel”.

But I do not call myself a rebel. I have never entertained rebellious notions, nor will I ever.

I am a loyalist.

Centuries ago, perhaps a millennium, the land of Dasaria came to be. Through the heroic actions of Siril Firstking, the terrible and violent Emperor Canas the First of Varana was cast away and defeated on the marbled dais of the Temple of Ki—in that magnificent battle a Dasarian of the richest blood met with the Mace of Canas, and saw it destroyed and scattered before him.

For hundreds of years Dasaria remained independent and glorious, the kingdom passing from one noble hand to another, its people protected and nourished from the ever-expanding tyranny of the Empire. Even in its twilight years, under the auspices of Queen Kallindra and Nelina, the forces of Dasar stood strong and gallant against the war-machine of the Empire.

Publicus suggests that the Kingdom fell from internal turmoil, but I would question his interpretation; indeed, I would question his source as well; a Varanite one, or a Dasarian? The Empire is notorious for retelling history in its own light; what would you believe?

Any government suffers from internal turmoil: to this day banditry and villainy exists across the land, each pursuing its own ambitions; but Dasaria did not fall from this pox. Indeed, on the return from the Crusades in Varana (yes, the people of Dasaria fought actively against the Empire), the Knights of the Fist returned with them Queen Nelina I, who restored the capitol of Dasaria, the city of Dasar, to rights and with it the army to protect it. Years before its fall, Dasaria was perhaps stronger than it had been in three score years.

Those of the cult of Culnul, the Nergalite cult, became weak; they had lost their stronghold in the Dasar River Valley, and their undead were cast out of the kingdom. While their loyalties were dubious, they were not responsible for the fall of Dasaria.

It was not internal turmoil that brought Dasaria to her knees: for this answer, one may only look at the vast Empire you see before you, buckling from its over-expansion and greed.

And, of course, there is Canas the First, presumably raised from the dead to plague this land once more.

Let us not forget he was undone by Siril Firstking, and I do not doubt for a moment that he will be unmade again. Recall that it was Dasarian blood that was shed to extricate Canas from this land, and Dasarian blood is bleeding now; you think that all men within the Legion are Varanite? That there is not Dasarians among them?

I echo Kadmiel Greywolf’s sentiment that Varana’s armies and numbers falter. They are far outmatched and outnumbered by our very own, in our own lands. This is the time. All must join the battle against Evil, from within and without - Varanites and Canites as one.

I am my own man. I speak with the name given to me by my mother, a woman of Rian, and my father, a man of Dasaria. I have served this land and its people for over sixty years. I have bled for my Queen and that which was the Kingdom of Dasaria, and I am prepared to do so again.

I call upon those that share these notions to seek us out; those that feel downcast under the heel of the Empire, those that have been robbed of their culture, their faith and their belief; indeed, I call on those who have had their rightful dignity usurped.

I am “calling o’er the sky the glorious argent and blue.”

Re: For What We Stand

On The Letter of the Templar wrote:To our fellow Dasarians,

It comes as a shock, and a sadness to us to learn of the Templar Raeflyn E'doras decision to side with the Man from Gulshire. It is unfortunate that he immediately accuses us of calling the Man from Gulshire and his followers “rebels.” We have never once used this term in our writing, as we do not believe them to be rebels, and do, in fact, sympathize with their grievances. He also seeks to levy the challenge that one author hides behind this name, which is patently false, we are not one voice, but many, that is why we go by the name “Publicus.” Nor have we stooped to the level of personal attacks on the people involved, as he has immediately attacked us with; instead we have merely asked them questions about their motives and plans, none of which the Templar addresses, and pointed out the much more dangerous and larger threat. Instead he counters with the well known history of Dasaria, claiming that the Man from Gulshire and himself can renew the glory days of Dasaria, neither of which is permanent to the present discourse on the matter at hand.

Again, we question how they plan on doing this without giving the land to the Canites. Our simple message from earlier bears repeating: “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand.” They do not even deny that they seek to divide this house, nor do they address how they plan on maintain a two front war against the Varanite Empire and the Canites, to say anything of bring victory. He also ignores the simple facts of population, development and resources available to each land, which in every category, the lands of Varana reign supreme. They only offer assurances that they can do these things.

And history has many interpretations. The Templar's is, perhaps, colored by his position historically and that his reputation is tied to the success of that time. Therefor, he paints a picture of a glorious Kingdom. Yet, there are tales of how, in the waning days of the conflict, it became very difficult to rally people to the banner of serving Dasaria, and the simple fact remains: the Kingdom did Fall. Even in those days, Varana had more and better equipped soldiers, greater resources to draw on, and while victories were had, they took all the resources of the land. Most of Dasaria was never recovered from Varana, instead, it all fell. We must also remind him, that these days are not the same as those days. The land is not as strong as it was, between the time under Varana's heel and the current destruction wrought by the Canite Hordes, the wells of strength in the land are as dry as those of Varana. Again, I ask, why should we risk loosing everything for the hope of some degree of gain, when everything can be gained simply by waiting, biding our time, and proving the worth of this land over the Canites, for when the Prince becomes the next Emperor, it will be again a land with the line of Siril again on the throne.

They also do not address the concern for the common people of this land, claiming only their their world will be better. Again, they offer no plan, no assurances, only their words and promises. Without a clear plan, without a clear path. why should we believe?

Though certainly less prevalent than the more verbose writings of such figures as Kadmiel Greywolf, Raeflyn E'doras, and Publicus, copies of a note make their way throughout the city of Cear, each written in a slightly different penmanship, but the ink upon all of them the same dark-red hue.

Stand, stand, whomever will!
And climb a chance's window sill
Stand with me upon this hill.

Stay, stay, whomever's sore
Of the Canites--nevermore
Will we sight this open door!

We the people stand for we
But I also stand for me.
This side speaks true, cannot you see?

This is treason, still we fight!
Know ye yet, the door's in sight?
The time is here to do what's right.

Or so we say.

I thought I would add my own voice to the voices that filter around the nation. While my comrades and I share the same ideals and ultimate purpose, we do have different perspectives. I also know first hand of the evil Varana has wrought upon Dasarians.

Let me tell you first of my origins. I was raised in a loving Dasarian family is a rural part of the city of Dasar. I was sent away early, to take training in Tharon's Cathdral—who I know as Marduk in the Dasarian faith as taught by my father. I followed that path for many years before returning home to an empty house, everything left as if my parents and baby brother had vanished without a trace. It was that moment that I left the Cathdral of Tharon and followed the path Tharon had set before me. It was that path that led to my evolution as Paladin of Marduk, blessed me with the friendship of Raeflyn E'doras and Kadmiel Greywolf and brought me to this moment where I finally write these words for all to see. Finally, it was that path that showed me first hand of the lies and evil that is the Varanite Empire.

In the search for my dear brother—who was taken by the Varanites—I was captured and learned the fate of my beloved family. I learned of the disembowelment and torture of my dear father, I can still hear his words in my mind, teaching me kindness and patience. I learned of the brutal rape and slaughter of my loving mother, who always showered us with affection. I learned that my brother was sold into slavery under Varanite orders. What was their crime? They were Dasarian. They believed the Dasarian faith and always taught us to remember the past, to remember Dasaria. They taught us of freedom and to fight for it, that freedom was more precious then any amount of gold. They fought for it and died for it as I am prepared to do as well. I cannot in good conscience continue this life without following the legacy of my family and seek the freedom of our people!

I was raised with the name of the TRUE king of the Gods on my lips. All praise Tharon for he was the one who slew Ch'taia without any aid from the god of plots! Lochwar did NOT bestow the gift of a crimson arrow to Tharon and demand his crown as payment. These are lies fed to you by his priests. What else do you expect from the god of tyranny and trickery?

Tharon single handedly defeated Ch'taia with the golden bow gifted to him by Farallis. A single silver arrow flew from his bow and pierced Ch'taia, destroying the god-witch. Thus Tharon ascended the throne to become King of the Gods!

I know Tharon, Arch-Warrior, as Marduk. Some would call him Bel Marduk. It has been fifty years since he was last called that; many Dasarians do not remember, perhaps. But know that while in name he exists as both Tharon and Marduk, he remains and is eternally the King of this pantheon!

What other lies do you think the Empire is telling you? Why should we fight Canas alongside the Varanites if they continue to use our people as fodder? They send us into battle injured with no supplies or backup... so that they may walk upon our corpses and provide more resources and undead soldiers for the Canites.

I call to you, Dasarian brothers and sisters to fight for our freedom! We do not have to fear for the future of our children!

Yours in Freedom and Battle,
Maeve Eamnon, Paladin of Marduk
