Mistakes and Determination

Post by Catharsis »

“I found an old journal, one of my own. Contemplation and reminiscing is not something I usually spend my time doing, but in order to focus on my goal, my faith, the mistress, I have to contemplate my actions prior to this and learn from my mistakes.”

”Get your behind out of bed and join us for breakfast already”!

Mom shouted from downstairs. I rubbed my eyes and stared into the ceiling. I knew what awaited me… Something I had come to loathe more than anything over the years.

“It’s getting cold Jahred… I know how you hate cold Porridge so get down here now.”

The truth was I hated porridge in all its’ form, hot or cold, runny or really really thick. Usually I skipped breakfast but I figured that I’d eat it out of sheer courtesy. Sure, having to sit there and chatter while slowly thrusting the spoon’o’yuckiness into my face without frowning was really hard. I get shivers down my spine just thinking about how much I hated breakfast with my family… Something I've found myself missing these last days?

My past is my weakness, my weakness my mistakes, my mistakes in turn is my past. For what I have done I must repent but the knowledge it has brought me will lead to righteousness, I shall abide no law is those keep me from my mistress. I shall find the relics scattered, the missing pierces of her lectures… I have been given powers, those I will use to summon my brethren…

For now I’ll shed a tear for my late mother. This will be the last bowl of porridge I ever eat and that as a tribute to my childhood.

Scribbled on the top of the paper; the reader should know that these texts are memories and re-assembling of old journals, this project was started so that who-ever gets to read this can learn from my mistakes, just like I have just by reading through my past.

I woke up, cold but sweaty, I usually felt that way when I was ill. I heard shouting from downstairs, breakfast was ready. Slowly I dragged myself out of bed, put on some clothes and made my way down the squeaky staircase. I smelled the porridge from upstairs but now it hit me like a sledgehammer to the face. To me the stench was almost putrid and it filled the whole floor. I sighed and inhaled the stench, something wasn't right, the stench was worse this day than others... It smelled like it was overcooked, almost burned. I walked into the kitchen only to find it empty, mom was not by the pots as she usually was and the only sound I heard was the noise from the porridge burning in the pot. I moved it off from the stove. Something was amiss.

"Mom, Dad?!" I shouted as I walked hastily around the house, looking for them. I got no reply. I remembered that my father usually sat on the front porch, watching over his property or was walking in the field this time a day so I ran through the frontdoor and into the yard.

"Mom, Dad?!" I shouted once more, answered only by the nightmarish silence. I ran shoeless into the cornfield, franticly searching for my father or at least a sign of where he and mom might have gone, I thought that they maybe had gone to check on the well which was located furhter back, behind the field. As I got into the middle of the field I stopped, i heard something, it sounded almost like someone who snapped their fingers. The sound wasn't what stopped me though, a wave of burning ran through my body, through my veins. I looked at the source of the pain, my foot. There were so much blood. Large spikes, almost the size of those on pitchforks, were scattered across the ground, one of the spikes had completely pierced my foot. It was so obvious, it was the work of a rogue, a perfectly placed trap. I was stuck, the pain was undescribable and there really was no way I could muster enough strenght to pull my foot loose.

"MOM, DAD?!" I shouted... I heard laughter. It did not come from my parents. I looked at my house, the direction the laughter seemed to come from. Someone wearing a large hooded cloak stood on my porch. He was surrounded by some kind of mist making it impossible to see his face or or features. I heard glass shattering.

"Jahred, run!" My father stood by the broken window on the second floor of the house, he was covered in bruises and blood. The cloaked man turned towards my father then back at me and snapped his fingers. The house was set ablaze. I couldn't scream, I just sat there watching my house burn to the ground while tears slowly ran down my cheeks. The cloaked mans laughter echoed in my head, I knew that this Laughter would haunt me forever.

He snapped his fingers again, I fainted...

Drenched in blood, bruised all over I woke up. I never thought that I would wake up again. During my “sleep” I went through the death of my parents, or at least my fathers. During my dreaming I had gone through the scenario a million times and I had come to the conclusion that there might be a tiny chance that my mother might still be alive, and even if that chance is slim to none, I was going to chase it. Not once during the nightmare did I see my mom, and as I think of it, I never saw her when it actually happened either.

With sore eyes I started looking around. I did not recognize the place but I can categorize the room. The structure of the room was as follows; there were three solid stone-walls surrounding me, the fourth wall was made out entirely of sheets of metal except for the door which was made out of bars. (Viewed from the entrance to the room) My bed or bunk was placed against the left wall, in the back left corner there were a small hole in the ground, large enough for a cat or small dog to sneak through but not large enough for me to crawl through. Against the back wall there stood an old desk with three drawers, in front of it stood a three-legged-stool. In the back right corner stood a chandelier with three arms holding one candle each. Nothing stood against the right wall. I put one and one together and came to the conclusion that I was held captive; I had been put inside a cell somewhere. I tried to rise from the bed where I was laying but couldn’t. I tried once more but to no success. I heard footsteps, I tried to sit myself up but I couldn’t even muster the strength to do that.

“Inmates!” It was a deep and thunderous voice I heard. “Stay put in beds, Dinner is done.” The man talking walked from cell to cell as I heard it, he opened one cell at a time, walked into the cell and put the food on the desk. The inmates didn’t say anything, they didn’t move. My heart beat harder and harder as he came closer.

The large male closed the barred door to the cell next to mine and wandered over to mine with heavy steps. As he approached the door to my cell my heart almost stopped. The man standing outside was well over 7 feet tall and almost just as wide. The light from my chandelier showed me his face; he had large, bushy eyebrows, a wide nose, bushy sideburns and two big tusks which shot out from his lower jaw. From a loop in his belt hung a large double-edged battleaxe. Now I understood why all the others were so quiet and obedient when he opened their cells. He looked like he easily could rip the arms right out from their sockets or decapitate an ox with one blow from his axe.

“A new one!” He grunted as he turned the key in the lock to my cell-door. As the door opened he put the stuff he carried on the floor, pulled the axe out of the loop in his belt and stood like a guard by the entrance to the cell as if someone superior to him in rank would be coming soon. I was right.

“Good work Khrathz, you can go back to your quarters now, I’ll finish your duties here.” A voice coming from a much smaller male person echoed through the long corridor of cells.
“I’ll go sleep then.” The half-orc guard said and left his post by my cell-door.
“You do that, sleep tight.” The smaller man replied to him. As Khrathz walked away the smaller man came to take his place. The man was dressed in a long robe which he dragged behind him as he walked. The robe seemed really expensive, the cloth was silken and very light, and the thread that was used to sew this robe looked like if it was made out of gold. The robe was coloured Dark green and black and on the right side of the chest there was a large emblem right over the heart, I couldn’t make it out, or I didn’t really give it much attention, my fear at this point was consuming my at the moment.

“Rise.” The man said and motioned with his hand for me to get out of my bed. I tried but stopped half-ways as it was too painful to move at all at the moment. I held my back in pain and laid myself down again, breathing heavily due to the agony.
“I... I…”
“He must’ve gotten you good.” The man broke me off before I got to say anything and let out a sinister laughter. He walked around my cell, checking the room out, nodding to himself.
“I like what they’ve done to the place.” He leaned over towards me.
“You know, the others haven’t even got a hole to… Well, you know what I mean.”
He said and laughed as he walked towards the door.
“Oh, I almost forgot!” He went just outside the door and picked up a wooden bowl with some greenish goo in it and placed it on the floor in the middle of the room.
“Here’s your dinner, you better eat it all as you begin training tomorrow. Sleep tight Jahred.”
He snickered a little, closed the door, locked it and checked it thoroughly so that I couldn’t lock pick it and sneak out and wandered off whistling.

It all seemed so strange. I had no idea of where I was or why I was here, was my mother alive or not, are these guys here to hurt me or help me, why am I lying in this cell? The questions where overwhelming. I looked around in the room and my gaze landed upon the bowl of goo. I decided to do one thing at a time, take each day as they come. Right now my goal was to get to that bowl and check its’ contents.
