☼☼☼ Shirtless Male Outfit ☼☼☼

Post by Sahji »

Once again we've discussed a shirtless male outfit in the IRC. Once again, Always Summer came up. Sahji likes Science, and so began the testing.

Here are the results:
Non-replacement Body 116 on NPC
Front, Back, Side
Non-replacement Body 116 on PC
Drow
Half Orc

Pros:
  • • Body/head skin differentiation isn't horrible. Not good, but it's about the same as many of the female outfits.
Cons:
  • • Visible head/neck seam. Not TOO different than many of the female outfits.
    • Size of the diffuse map is 512, which is conservative but also lower quality than many of the new outfits Wired imports.
    • Some of the textures look rough on certain races. See the PC Half Orc. This is likely due to the 512 resolution.
Sahji's verdict: Body 116 is "good enough" for me as is. I would be happy to see this in game.

Further Discussion
Permissions: Pere has been so kind as to send something to the original creator to see what kind of permissions are on the outfit.

Alteration/Enhancement: Depending on permissions, some of these could be enhanced. The resolution could be raised and texture could be thusly refined. I would be willing to try but I'm not skilled enough to say it can be done.

Different outfits: If you know of any other shirtless male outfits, do point our way. Preferably it is already adapted to NWN2, but if it's in another game, hopefully in higher resolutions, it may be possible to port it over. Please keep in mind taste rules like PG-13.

I'm not a big fan of most of the Always Summer armors, but assuming we can have a shirtless outfit that is unique and doesn't override anything else I say bring on the lack of shirts! :3

I am of the opinion that the naked head/body seam challenge is unsurmountable. All heads AND outfits except head01 and _cl_body01 are essentially custom and were exported with different 3ds settings, different neck seams, different tintmaps, and are essentially unmatchable. The only workaround is to have a hard differentiation in the body model like a choker or necklace that's enough of a separation that you don't completely notice. I can make NPCs where this looks 'pretty good' using Always Summer or what have you, but it will NEVER look good on a PC who can have an arbitrary skin tone. Unless we go back to the beginning and fix the nude as the base for everything and armor as an overlayed belt-model or similar (skyrim path).
