Stealing

Post by Vahene »

I've tried several times to write this, and I'd prefer a DM response.

Can something be done about sleight of hand please? I have a level 2 warlock (Vahene Shadowight), who within seconds of getting 5 cure light potions had them stolen along with a duskwood spear. Congrats to whomever thought it was benefitting them to steal from a low level warlock who doesn't even have enough money to buy proper armor yet and is still in the starting outfit.

Any way that a cap can be placed on the lowest level you can steal from? Like levels 1-5 can't be stolen from or something? Or at the very least, turn it off until the DM Client goes live?

I've had way too many people stealing from my characters lately, and quite frankly, its ruining my enjoyment of Dasaria. I can't even stand still without worrying if someone is stealing from my character. I'm so angry right now, I'd rather do anything else but go in the game.

I can't really say I've had any troubles with the 3 of my chars that I've been on so far but I can see how pickpocketing could ruin your experience.

If you need any help with money/equipment feel free to give me a tell when I'm on.

What would you like us to do? The rules are clear. If people are grief-pickpocketing, we need the details. I can't remember the last time I heard someone got banned for doing such.

If the majority of the playerbase feels strongly enough about the abuse of the skill, then let's hear some concrete suggestions to help with the situation. I'm sorry, but just saying "change it" isn't enough. I do sympathise somewhat, and I know it makes things awkward. But is it really worth getting upset over?

If you need any help with items and money you could talk to me.

Charname: Lok'Tok
Account Name: ChikenKannon

Keep in mind that all of this would be OOC because if you asked me for coin and items IC Lok would either want you to pay him over time. Or he would laugh at you and break a bottle over your head.

Funny thing,

Something exists in the game, to stop this,
Its called SPOT skill.

See, then you could actually DO something.

If a boar hits you, you work on your AC,
If a Trap hits you, you work on your Disarm,
if a thief hits you, People complain.

HEY WYVERN !

Im a low level thief, and am tired of people casting this
MAGIC MISSLE. I mean, it NEVER misses !! its kinda
unbalanced !! Id like to see if removed, or capped.
And this MAGE ARMOUR ? I mean, if they want armour,
they should have to buy it, like everyone else. And Healing ?
Clerics ? WAYYYY Overpowered !! Have them buy potions
like the rest of us !! I mean... seriously.
Where does it end.

People, come on. Use your common sense, if your getting Pickpocketed,
You MIGHT have to spend a few seconds and think, HOW did this
happen, and HOW can I keep it from happening again.

Spot, + wis, +The free bracers that are given out at
the end of the cutter quest, Should keep things even.

The problem is, I guess, that I never saw anyone. I was playing my warlock. I guess certain professions just have a sign over their heads that says "steal from me, I have no core skill in spot or listen". I know I'm upset, and probably angrier than I've ever been since I started playing Das on NWN1 even.. but I don't know Wyvern. I would tell you who did it if I saw it. Heck, if I saw it, my character would have said something to the person, and tried to RP it.

The problem is I see no RP involved with stealing. None at all.. and I know you can't force someone to RP.. so that's not really a solution. So, one of two things is happening. One, the server is magically eating my items.. or, two, hiding and stealth apparently is working.

I probably should cool down before posting anymore, sorry, I don't really know what to say. I didn't see who did it. I wish I did.

It would be the latter. Reporting a grief-thief would be impossible if you couldn't spot them or their attempt.

Sorry you are having such a problem Vaheen. I know that stealth is working once you get your levels high enough as there have been people that have not been able to see Rhode even after he starts talking to them.

Rhode has been picked a few time but I think they mostly have gotten coins from him. Ironically Rhode has never seen someone getting picked even though his spot skill is not bad.

We saw your character last night and where trying to get your attention but you were too fast for Rhode to catch up to. I think Satinka just wanted to see Rhode get a good tongue lashing and had pointed you out for Rhode to offer his protective services to.

See, this here is EXACLTY why I RP all my Thieving exps,
I also follow a kinda guidelines to how and what are acceptable.

I know, it doesnt help you guys, but here is a general overview
of How I run Dario, My Ingame thief....

1) I only steal from each person, MAX every 30 minutes.
2) I actually Maneuver, move and try and sneak up
near terrain, and trees, or around corners,
3) I actually check and make sure the person is
MODERATE or greater before I steal from them,
otherwise, I feel like Im kicking a puppy
4) RUN LIKE HELL, Makes no sense that you would
kinda sit there, counting the coins, after a lift. LEAVE.
Gives the mark a chance to see you moving, and figure it out.

I say put a longer time limit between steals, so griefing is a bit harder and more noticeable. If possible, I think it'd make sense for you not to be able to steal from anyone 10 levels below you, as well.

Personally I think stealing weapons and/or armour shouldn't be possible, because really, what kind of halfling is going to be able to steal a spear from a Half-Orc? No matter how dumb that Half-Orc is, he's going to notice a little Halfling struggling to carry his spear away. But that may be a little too harsh of a nerf.

Wouldn't that make it LESS noticeable? Do what I do. Start telling people to not bump into you (if they do).

Seems like too much asking of the Devs to nerf/change/modify. Let's just handle our own social problems ourselves.

Vahene, we all were lower levels at some point, and were picked on by the thieves, but the time will come when you can pay back to all/any thieves you catch in the action.

You have a lot of OOC friends who can help you with the starting gear. Or just run the FedEx quests and you will be lvl 3 and have enough coin to afford any armor you need.

I would like to work in some restrictions that have been raised in other threads eventually (some sort of size and/or weight check on the item for example) but without further investigation, I am unsure what is practical right now. And I can't see anything being done in the near future.

Unfotunately, the best fix is to walk around with a lot of bullets in your inventory, scattered into as many slots as you can afford to lose to them. This will spread the chance of what can be stolen.

This is not a suggestion?

Then I will post a valid suggestion here:

Turn off pickpocketing entirely. Problem solved.

Yes, I know.. people will whine because of the 'lost roleplaying opportunities'. But if you are a good roleplayer, living in your own perfect world, where everyone is great at it, you do not need the skill to roleplay a pickpocket anyway.

When it comes down to it, there are more people using this ability to grief, than to roleplay.
