So much had happened since Gregor had left the city of Cear. The Lochwarian Temple in Thrall's Gate had changed leaders, a drought had left the simpler peasants and farmers looking at a difficult winter, and there was word of incursions of the living dead. The last was whispered in hushed breaths mostly among the common peoples though drunken adventurers were a bit more verbose in the taverns throughout the town. He hated being among the unsavory elements but his travels had taught him if you wanted to know a city's business, you go to the tavern.
Gregor also knew if you wanted to know the politics go to the library of the largest church. The simple warrior had only the most basic understanding of the written language but his ears were sharp. There was much to raise the hairs on the back of his neck with the words he had heard exchanged within the church at Thrall's Gate. The commoners were fearing the long winter to come and many blamed the Lochwarian preisthood for their troubles. The calming words from Father Minuvas, the new head of the church, that Gregor had witnessed had dispersed the crowd and soothed Gregor's mind until Father Minuvas had barked out orders to the brothers of the temple. 'Bar the graneries and double the guard. There will be no rationing from the Temple's stores to those who have ill prepared for the coming winter.'
Something had to be done. The prayers of the peoples had gone unanswered and it appeared they were to be turned away in this most dire hour. Gregor and Tana had been away too long. She was wise in the ways of nature but even Gregor knew the rains that had come were too little and too late. Father Minuvas surely could call upon the larger cities in the Empire. Why was he not? The simple blade wielder could not fathom the mind of one that seemed so wise.
The governor of Cear had certainly sent word to the Capital at this desperate hour. Gregor knew he had to do something. Right now he had to find Tana. He nodded to the preists roaming throughout the archives as he left. Gregor's original intention was to impress Tana with how much she had taught him. His reading skills were rapidly improving and he hoped to find a way to write what he could not say to her. The best laid plans were in ruin now. His commitment to his God and the people he had taken as his own would mean his personal thoughts must be pushed aside. He wandered into the woods looking for her heavy with these thoughts.
