Wow an hour and a half of griefing for bumping the guard? It wasnt 5 minutes after my very first time in the server where mohawk chick stopped me and threatened to kill me (I'm talking right outside the Inn), then send me to the gaol and something about crowns and a writ. My offense....wait I forgot what I did....I think I was standing in the middle of the road watching them interrogate the other halfling.
Imo if the guards can act this way they would make a lot of enemies....and seeing how this world is an empire where just about everyone is armed, it kinda makes sense they would fall victim to an ambush or two.
Monook makes a good point senseless killing is stupid and should not be tolerated. However properly Rp'd evil characters can bring any server fresh action and renewed life. The problem is I've not been in a server where really awesome evil rp'd characters aren't exploited by the guards power. While the guards job may seem tough, someone who is truly trying to RP an evil character has it just as rough. They have no rights, and are often exploited by the guard with the help of a DM.
I've never complained about this but I bring it up because someone mentioned how the guard has it rough to have to put up with the other players.
I'm truly hoping and it seems as if this server could change all this. Perhaps a Chaotic Evil DM for balance?

I think people are missing the real point here. CK had it pretty much pegged, despite what you might think of the thread title. There's really nothing new in Jeh's post, it's always been this way in Dasaria. He WAS just stating it again because, well, from what we're seeing it's possible some people might not be aware of or understand this. As long as the server's been up, Das1 or 2, the two toughest things to play have been player faction guards, and "bad guys". And for you guys that weren't around for Das1, a LOT of the "action" had to do with "evil" PCs (I thought at times there were more of them than good ones). For this reason, I don't recommend players play one of these two their first time out.
That being said, I have to ask, why WOULDN'T there be harsh consequences for evil characters? Well, not even evil in current circumstances, but more likely chaotic, since it could be argued that Varana (and it's guards) aren't necessarily "good". But in any civilized setting (such as a city or empire) there is invariably a lawful structure, and those that break those laws face 'harsh consequences'. It's been said already, and should be obvious from the campaign background, but this isn't a "fair" society. It's set in the conquered land of an Empire ruled by a totalitarian regime.
OOC, the guard faction right now IS a PC faction, as are the 'bad guys'. Both sides should keep this in mind, and that mistakes in RP ettiquite, etc are often made. As Wyv often says, it's just a game.
**EDIT**
To clarify after rereading some posts... If someone is indiscriminately killing with no IC reason, this is griefing. It's not the guards duty or job to deal with this (other than to let the DM team know, same for any other player).
The guards are strictly an IC faction. They can't and don't enforce server rules. Although, they may be given special abilities to help them enforce "laws of Cear and Varana" in an in character setting... not the ability to flag EOS or ban, but they might be able to place bounties or subdue/arrest in the future. If you decide to kill guards IC, don't be suprised if the rest of their group finds out and decides to be rather hostile towards your character. That could be said of killing members of any of the player factions as well, though.
As for RP ettiquite, one probably shouldn't assume to know another character's name before being told, nor should they know what or how to react to "going hostile" in the GUI....

ok agreed. i take back what i said about harsh punishments. ive played on servers where i have been imprisoned, exiled from the town etc, and it was quite entertaining and well played.
i just had it stuck on my mind about how we were harrassed for no reason and ended up being declared "kos" for doing nothing.

For the record, I was also there for the first part of the incident as was Wyvern as his player character. And I am sorry, the accused thief deserved to be accused. In a city where pickpocketing is rampant, if any player gets close to characters, repeatedly bumps up against them saying nothing, then takes off like a bat out of hell when the guard yells stop, you deserve what you get.
If you were in NYC, and you bump into someone, and that person suddenly says I think that guy stole my wallet, if a cop yells at you to stop and you take off running, what do you think would happen?
For the record, I also played a guard in the first campaign and rose to the rank of Briagdier. It is not a fun job as you may think. Especially when a good 75% of the server wishes to tell you that you have no right to enforce the IC laws and the other 25% complain that you don't do enough to enforce the IC laws. I do strongly advise that the guards start getting some title before their names because I for one am tired of seeing players actually state "well you dont have a guard title so I dont have to listen to you."
Furthermore, Varana and Cear are not nice liberal societies. If a guard stops you to ask why you are wearing red on a yellow day, they can. RP it out. I can assure you, the two guards in question are not PvP crazed idiots.
Furthermore, you are acting on false assumptions as well. It takes a lot of conceit to assume this one incident prompted this thread. I assure you, it was a long long time in coming. That one incident with your thief is nothing compared to assults on the town, rampant killing of NPC guards, rampant pick pocketing and as stated above...complete refusal to even RP that the guards even have right to question someone...which they most certainly do.

I have to agree.Jehannum wrote:For future reference, as a DM I do not buy the you-dont-know-my-name gimmick.
I think its a cop out for poor play and it holds no water on this server.
If that is all you have to lean on, then youre on shaky ground.
Just from a player perspective, who played questionable characters (criminals) on Das1, you can easily determine someone's name in a variety of ways. The funnest thing for me to do was to try to talk my characters out of trouble. Obviously that'll be slightly more challenging in Das2 with the laws as they are. (Call it a goal
The guards are around, and you would assume that any guard should know your character unless you just flat out don't speak, and even then, the Talon probably know who you are anyway.

Bad CL, no. Be a good DM and don't bring him back... please...Dm Chicken Little wrote:On a side note, Ive been watching many of the bad guys on Das2 so far, making me wish to go back to filling that role myself as a player...just to help show that it doesnt have to be about murder and pvp. You can tell some great stories being the bad guy. Almost ready to go try to dust one of mine off. Almost.
