“Hey, woah, wait a minute! You two don’t need to kill me!”
“Yeah why not? Boss said to.”
“Well, yeah but in a couple of minutes he’s gonna be dead right? Why should you listen to him?”
“Well…”
“I mean I bet he doesn’t treat you very well. Or pay you very well, heck I bet you probably have thought about leaving before. Wouldn’t now be the best time since ya know, he’s dead?”
“I guess you have a point.”
“Yer damn right I do. So how about you two come untie me, then you can decide what you want to do with your lives. Deal?”
“Sure.”
“Fantastic!”
The two goons untied Hard and he made a swift exit from the warehouse. Moments later their boss stormed into the room looking irate.
“That lying little bas… Where the hell is he?”
“Uh… aren’t you supposed to be dead boss?”
“Isn’t Hard supposed to be dead? Where the hell is he?”
“We let him go.”
“You did what?!?!”
“Well we thought you were a gonner so we didn’t see the point in killing him.”
“Well that little punk just made a fool out of me. So get your stuff boys, for tonight, we hunt.”
Hard watched from the rooftops as the men left the warehouse. Tonight was going to be fun.

Tonight ended up being incredibly boring.
Hard had planned on following the three men back to the supposed person who had put them up to the whole faming his thing. As it turned out they were very persistent and spent the whole night aimlessly looking for Hard amongst the darkened alley ways. Roughing up beggers and ladies of the night trying to gain a bead on him. Unfortunately, all their rough ways looked to finally be bringing some unwanted attention.
As the guardsmen approached the three shady fellows, Hard recognized two of them as the ones he had clubbed in his escape from the tavern that morning. In an instant a scuffle broke out between the two groups, there was shouting, cursing a few cries of pain, but the end result was that the men were dragged off to the gaol. Hard stood stunned for a moment, his only lead just got carted off to gaol, by those that were looking to take him to the same place. In an instant he knew what he must do.
Hard was going to break his would be murderers out of gaol, so that they could continue their pursuit of him, so that he might ultimately follow them back to the big boss man in charge of it all, all without them knowing that he broke them out and without getting caught and hung in the process.
Even as he thought it out, it sounded at best idiotic, at worst suicidal, and at the least an enormous headache.

The idea was brilliant. In fact so brilliant Hard could barely comprehend that he had come up with it (to be fair he reads a lot so he may or may not have actually had a unique idea on this one). Magic was the key to his problem as he saw it. So, he would pretend to be a ghost.
The timing would need to be perfect though, at midnight there would only be one guard on duty, and that would be when he would strike. Hard hid himself away in a dark corner near the gaol, until the time was right. He then pulled from his pack a scroll of invisibility, after reading the enchantment he would have to work quickly. As his image faded to nothingness he then chanted the spell to make the illusion work, while Ghostly Visage was mostly a parlor trick in the dead of night, in a gaol where people are tortured and killed? It could prove very convincing.
Hard quietly slipped in the front door of the gaol and promptly strode towards the lower levels where the cells were.
…
Near the cells the lone guard was bored, the night was long and the conditions horrendous down in the depths. That is when he heard it.
“My soooonn….”
“Who said that?” He snapped his head in all directions trying to pinpoint the speaker.
“Yoouuuu kiiillleeed meeee.”
“Dad? Is that you?”
“Alll I waaanted was fooor yooouuuu too beee haaappy.”
“But, your… your not dead…”
The door from the first level flew open… to reveal nothing.
“I just saw you this morning… you ain’t dead…”
“You kiilllled meeee… I neveeerrrr wanted youuuu too be a guaarrrdd.”
“But…. But… Dad?” The guard was visibly shaken now looking into the empty doorway.
“Yoouuu kiillleeed meee… And nooowww I am taakkinngg youuuu with meeeee.” A ghostly hand slowly materialized in front of the guards face. Slowly the entire ghostly form appeared.
“Coommee hooome son…” The ghostly hand touched the guard on the forehead.
The guards world went black…

Note from the Editor:
After months of working with Mr. Colt in trying to complete this book, he came upon a startling revelation. That it was in fact Mr. Colt that framed himself. Using an elaborate set of illusions put in place during a night of heavy drinking, Mr. Colt's illusion hired goons with which to off some hookers and then frame himself.
Apparently he thought it would make for an amazing story. The key was that Mr. Colt not find out that he in fact was out to kill himself. When after another night of heavy drinking he recalled having put the plan into motion, he contacted me to call off the rest of the book. Not because he didn't think the revelation would make for a good story, but because the whole idea of finishing writing the story of how he viciously fought off a corrupt villian that was in fact him, suddenly bored him.
So to all the readers who came this far in the story, I thank you for reading. Mr Colt will be starting his next work shortly, one that will be a complete story, with a conclusion and everything.
Sincerely,
The Editor
